Questions to be answered:
why do I think Brazil, Russia, India and China have been singled out as the new economic powers? What, in my opininon, are some of the salient features of these economies that make them candidates to become major economic players.
While trying to answer those questions I kept shifting between two perspectives. Am I looking for the initial reasons those countries have been growing in the past, or am I looking for the current characteristics that define them as a potential players? In the end I decided it's probably two sides of the same medal.
Looking at the BRIC countries from an not too well informed outsider's perspective, this what comes to mind first as characteristics they all (or most of them) share.
- large landsize
- large population, meaning sufficient workforce
- natural resources
- key political player in their region
- presence of several multinational companies (although this may be a result rather than a reason for selecting BRIC as NEPs)
some other characteristics that may apply (I haven't checked them since it was to be a knee-jerk reaction):
- high level of education
- government push to support private enterprise
- entrepreneurial mindset of the population (definitely applies to China and India)
- high rate of population growth, leading to increasing number of highly educated young people
- low cost of living meaning lower wages
