Hi from New Zealand and new to the board

Link naar dit bericht Geplaatst door de TopicStarter : 18-04-07 00:45

Wow this is great, sorry sounding so excited.... I was born in Holland but moved to New Zealand when I was 3 Yrs old (quite a few years ago now).

I'm just curious how expensive horse riding and I suppose eventing in Holland is compared to say New Zealand. I'm completing at 1* level here, my average season would cost approx $1500.00. (My start fees alone) this includes the Novice (1.10m) competitions as well as the Fei 1* competitions of which New Zealand only has a handful of being Puhinui, Richfields, Kihikihi and I believe there is one or possibly 2 in the South Island but I'm not sure (I'm located in the North Island).

How expensive is competing and general horse riding in Holland, I've always been told it very expensive but I would love to learn more.

Thanks in advance
Marcella

Hi Marcella, welcome to Bokt. I was able to visit New Zealand in November last year and I fell in love...where exactly do you live?

I understand that you are competing at jumping competitions? The levels here in Europa difficult to compare to yours. I personally own two American Quarter Horses, so competition is hardly comparable to dressage or jumping...

Boarding a horse in Holland is much more expensive than in New Zealand...knowing that you need a stable and hardly can keep a horse outside throughout the year. Boarding alone could add op to 500 New Zealand Dollars a month...depending where you live.

I live in the North Island at a place called Warkworth. It's about an hours drive north from Auckland.

I'm currently eventing here, and too be honest have been trying to track down a horse that a friend of mine sold to a belgum guy, who I think has since on sold it. We understand the name of the horse was "Fly In Kiwi". I've found a couple of photo's on the web of him but trying to find out how he's going and if the new owners are enjoying him, as he was such a great and cool horse to play with. Thats how I stumbled onto this website. My dutch though is pretty crap when it comes to reading it, but I can understand a few words here and there so it will be great practise as I do want to learn abit more than I currently know. Bloos

I think the actual showing is a lot cheaper in Holland though...You only go for a day, so no boarding at the shows, most people don't travel more than an hour to a show, and the fees are a lot lower. I payed like 5 0r 10 euros for a test in Holland, here I pay 45 dollars per test, 55 for FEI. And then they nickel and dime you to death with office fees and what not!!

Well, Belgium is not exactly Holland, and maybe you don't know, but it is pretty crowded here. However, there are also members of the board from Belgium, so fire away, you never know what you might get. If you have pictures, it is even better, and if your friend has a name or a clue about the place the new owner is living, we might actually be able to track him down....

I am living North of Amsterdam, however my parents live in Belgium, close to the Dutch border. They are however not very much into horses.

There are actually al lot of smaller events in Holland, and a couple of big ones too. I however am more connected to the western style (American Dressage) so cannot tell you much about dressage or jumping.

In New Zealand dollars, on average I'd pay $60.00 to $85.00 per event start fee and generally there's an additional $10.00 - $20.00 for a yard for the horse and for a 3DE -FEI it's quite easy to pay $235.00 start fee and another $75.00 or so for the yard. From memory it's going to cost me about $305.00 to do Taupo 3DE 1* in the middle of May.

As for Travelling I have 2 equestrian parks close to me being 1 to 1½ hours drive then the others are scattered around from 2 hours to 5 hours (Taupo) and 8-9 Hours (which I would camp overnight in the truck) to the Hawkes Bay. I won't go any further south than Taupo (even though Hawkes bay is a long drive I'm only doing that one as my last led up to Taupo)

Pony Club, which is different here to Horse Trials you would expect to pay $35.oo for the event but that only goes up to 1.05m.

As for the horse, I think we have track him to Florinoor Hoodland? we have seen the photo's and it definity looks like him, and the guy was going to call him either "Flying Kiwi" or "Flyin Kiwi" He was sold end of 2005 and went over. We understood that he was going to Showjump and the guy jumped him up to 1.30m?? or so

Does anyone know of her?? and how he is going??

There's tons of dressage going on in Holland, sometimes as many as 5 shows on the same date, you just get to pick! Those are the smaller ones though. The bigger events are usually international, soharder to get into and, heeh, more expensive...

Ik think you mean Florinoor Hoogland, she is currently riding "Fly in Kiwi" and she participated with this horse in the 1*event in Portugal last month (see below). It won't be hard to find her phonenumber. I believe she rides a few horses for the owner, Jos Houben and he used to live in Belgium indeed!

Maybe you mean "Bergum" of "Burgum"?
That is a village in the northern of the Netherlands.
Bergum is the normal name and Burgum is the Friesian name.

It sure is a small world, especially in Eventing *LOL*

Regarding the costs, I estimate a full season would cost me approximately 250 euros in entry fees for 10 shows at 1.10 level, excluding stabling, transport etc. 1 * shows (under FEI rules) are much more expensive, entry fees and stabling costs would add up to 200 euros.

I reckon most of my money goes to stabling, instruction, vet and transport, and I'd rather not add it up for fear of a heart attack Knipoog The shows in itself are peanuts compared to the regular costs Knipoog

I'm sorry, but no...
Maybe I can see what I can do to get in contact with Jos or Florinoor to ask about Sam but I can't make any promises.

I would so agree with you on the "having a heart attack" my husbands still trying to breath after me telling me what the latest total is on the vet bill thats just come in on one of my nags (sorry slang word for horses).

I was told once that you needed to have a horse riding licence to ride a horsein holland, is this true or can anyone get on and "go" for a ride somewhere?? (not meaning in any FEI competition).

Fortunately, vet bills come straight to me or my mum, my husband doesn't even see them *LOL* My vet bills in 2006 would have bought me a nice new horse, but then again none could be as nice as the two we've got Schijnheilig

We do have some kind of riding license called "ruiterbewijs", which is required for some of our 'natural parks, but it is definitely not a legal requirement when going for a hack. Most riding schools I know couldn't care less about it, they just want to know you can handle a horse. In general, they won't let you hack out on your own on their horses, you'd have to join one of their groups.

We don't have anything like that here, In NZ you can get on any horse, so long you had permission from the owner, and go for a hack. There are some beaches and forrests that you can ride in, some places you need to register with first, so that way they know who's riding where and they give you updates as to whats happening in the forrests, when it comes to logging they tell you what areas to stay away from.

There are alot of pony clubs around, these clubs only go to the age of 21 though and you need your own horse, you can join up as an adult rider but you can't graze on the land then so you need transport.

there are also Horse hire places where you can go on treks, and you always have a guide that comes out with you, it's very relaxed, the scarey thing is some of these hire horse places are sometimes like dealing with cowboys.

It's not too different here, most people I know do not have their "ruiterbewijs" and won't even bother to get it either.

Is New Zealand much different from Australia, horsewise? A good friend of mine is an Aussie and she's told me lots about riding at home.

I've never riden in Australia, but from the websites I've been on I would say they would be very similar. There is a chat room called "horsetalk.co.nz" that I belong to as well which has NZ and Ozzie people attached to it, it's really good and the questions we get asked and we ask them all seem to relate to each others counties.

Simmie - I've managed to track down what I believe could be the stable that Sam maybe at, I've emailed them and asked them a few questions, I'll see what comes from it.. here's hoping.

I must admit it's been fun doing the detective work, and I've made a couple of extra "friends" along the way, which has to be an added bonus (along with learning a couple of dutch words, trying to get my head around the chat room has been quite entertaining, there's been a couple of phone calls to my mother asking what certain words meant Haha! )

You first need to upload your pictures on a hosting site, you can't copy directly to the board.

I had the "offical" spelling last night, yes my family is in Burgum Knipoog

Just wondering also, have "back-protectors" now been made manditory for riding in cross-country like it pretty much has here as well.?
