The Toy Shop

The door shut and the room became darker and darker.
Many thoughts crossed my mind.
Did my parents left me deliberately? Do they even know that I’m missing? Are they looking for me?
I couldn’t answer my questions, so I thought back to what had happened.
My parents took me to a toy shop. We were browsing through some toys when I saw a toy I wanted.
I said I would come back in a minute, but when I came back, they were gone! It was around six o’clock, it was almost closing time.
I searched from the front of the shop to the back anyway. While I was searching, I got afraid of the sudden twilight around me. The lights went off. I was alone.
I turned around, and rushed to the front door. I pulled as hard as I could but the door was shut. All the people that were there a few minutes ago, were suddenly vanished into thin air.
I didn’t knew if it was just my imagination, but I swear I could hear voices. But I couldn’t see anyone. Was I dreaming? I pinched myself, but I felt pain. So I wasn’t sleeping.
Now, I really got scared. Alone in this unknown place? Without knowing where my parents went? Without water or food? Maybe I’m locked up here for days or maybe forever, I don’t know! I got to find a way out. It’s too dangerous to find a way out in the dark. I’ll wait for tomorrow, to find a way at broad daylight.
I found myself some cushions to sleep on. I put them in a corner, so that I could overview the whole room. I laid down and tried to get some sleep. As the minutes flown, and the hours past, the clock stroke twelve o’clock.
Suddenly it seemed like I saw something moving in the corner of my eye. But as I looked closer, everything went still. I didn’t feel comfortable anymore. As I looked through the room to see if it wasn’t my imagination, I saw a teddy bear lying on the ground. I walked to the teddy bear and picked it up. As I looked closer, the bear was missing an eye. I threw the bear away and I walked back to the cushions. But exactly when the bear touched the ground, I heard a squeak. I turned around and froze. Was that the bear? No that can’t be, it’s just a toy right?
I walked to the bear and picked it up. I pressed it but it didn’t make a sound. That’s strange. Suddenly I heard marching from the floor above me. It sounded if there were thousands of things marching! At first I thought, I’ll stay here, and wait till the marching stops, but my curiosity ordered me to go upstairs and check it out. So, I slowly walked upstairs without making a sound. If there were things or people, then I don’t need them to see me right?
There were three doors, two locked and one door was a bit open. The sound was. I peeked around the corner of the opened door, nobody there. I walked to the cupboards, to search for a key. I searched in all of the drawers, but there was no key.
In the corner of the room was a coat rack, with a coat on it. Quickly, I searched for the key in the pockets, and there was the key! Well key… Many keys! I walked back to the closed door and tried some keys. Fortunately, the third key was the right key.
I pushed the door open very soft. I didn’t believe what I was seeing! I saw tons of puppets. That marching, these puppets, how? The puppets are alive! It turned black in front of my eyes and I fainted.
I became at conscious, I was laying on the ground in the center of the room. All these puppets were standing around me. One puppet spoke to me, I think he was their leader or something. “Hello there!”, it said. “Hello.”, I said, still feeling a bit dizzy. “You fainted when you saw us. You don’t believe we’re real, don’t you? I’m General Viper, and you are?”, it asked friendly.
I was still a bit astonished. “I… I’m Kayleigh. I was shopping here with my parents. But when I let them out of my sight, they were gone! I was searching the shop, when all the lights went out and the door locked. That happened a few hours ago. When I heard marching, I went upstairs to see what it was. But how can it be that you are… Alive?”, I asked.
General Viper said, “Actually, nobody is allowed to know it, but you have seen us already so I can tell you. Every night at 12 o’clock, we wake up. We can do whatever we want till 2 o’clock. Then we go to sleep again. Don’t think we are the only one who wake up. All the toys in the whole world wakes up! Even your own toys in your room. Every night we wake up, we’re just have fun and play with each other!”
“Wow, that’s amazing! I’m speechless… Oh wait, that sound I heard, was from the teddy bear!” I whispered. “What teddy bear?”, asked General Viper. “Don’t you know? Downstairs are much more toys! Including a teddy bear, which made a sound I heard. Shall I take you all there?”, I said.
They agreed so I led the way to the ground floor. I just wanted to open the door, but suddenly General Viper said: “Wait! Let me go in there first. Then I can explain about us and about you Kayleigh. If we come in all at the same time, they may be scared.” I agreed.
While we were waiting, some puppets were introduced to me.
General Viper came back after a few minutes. “It’s ok, you can come now.”, he said.
I pushed the door open and let all the puppets go first. I would go next, but when I wanted to walk into the room, General Viper and the leader of the toys downstairs stopped me. They said they wanted to talk to me. Not here, but upstairs. We walked upstairs, to the room I’ve been before. The one where I found the key. I walked in, to the middle of the room. Then suddenly, they locked the door! I was trapped! I heard giggling on the other side of the room. General Viper said, “Haha, you stupid little girl! You never had to trust us! Now we’ve got you trapped.”
Oh no! How could I be so stupid to trust them? Now I’m locked up in here! How can I get out?
