Zo is het gegaan bij Dove van Elements
Now, as to what happened....
Dove was acting a bit odd and so I got the stalls cleaned and kept her inside. The horse in the other stall, keeping Dove company in the barn, was Razz. She isn't due until September.
Well Dove finally looks like she is getting down to business, sweating and pawing, etc. I am watching her closely, cleaning up poo, and am behind her watching when she goes down. I finally see a bubble coming. Then, what I see inside the bubble puzzles me, as it doesn't look like a foot. A little further out and I see it's a head! I push the head back into Dove and look for feet, only to not find them. I get Dove up and get both arms inside and find a knee, follow down to a hoof, and carefully unfold the leg and get the hoof in the birth canal. Then I go hunting for the second leg and it seems like forever before I find it and get the foot into the canal... I then check to make sure the nose is in position and all I can feel is the curve of the neck and the very back edge of the cheek bone.
Dove starts pushing HARD at this point and I am pushing back to keep her from getting the foal jammed. Then her rectum starts to prolapse! I called the vet first, then called Heather to ask her to shut the cam off. I honestly thought that I was going to lose both momma and baby, and didn't think folks needed to see that.
The vet had me give Dove both banamine and rompum to try to stop her from pushing, but she kept right on trying and I had to keep her up and moving to give the baby a chance to get in position, and to keep Dove from prolapsing before the vet got here. It took 40 minutes for him to get here. (BTW, it was his day off yesterday, but he saw my number on the caller ID and answered anyway! He came out with his wife to save Dove and the foal despite the fact that they had dinner plans!!!) Right before he pulled up, Dove planted her feet and refused to move and started pushing again! I got behind her and with both hands, pushed back with everything I had left! I was yelling at her (all the while gasping for breath after fighting to keep her moving for 40 minutes) to STOP PUSHING DAMMIT!
Dr Mueller got into the barn and gave her a shot to knock her out completely. She went down and he gave her something else (sorry, don't know what ). then we both got behind her and he got baby's nose into the birth canal and started to pull while I pushed on the rectum. We could not BUDGE the baby! He ended up getting his calf puller, which seems harsh, but at this point we were trying to save Dove! He got the baby cranked out and since Dove was okay at that point we started working on the baby. We saw neither heartbeat nor respiration, so Dr Mueller started pumping his chest and I started breathing for him. The the vet grabbed a shot of Dopram for him, gave that, and we both kept working on the colt. Soon his heart started beating on it's own, and then he started breathing!!!
I ran and grabbed some towels and started to dry him off, then pulled him over to a dry spot and cleaned up some of the mess. The vet milked some colostrum from Dove (still out cold) and tubed that into the little guy's tummy. When Dove finally woke up and got up again, Dr Mueller removed the placenta, examined it (looked fine) and then flushed her. Both Dove and colt got penicillin and the colt also got a shot of Vitamin B Complex. I finished getting the straw down and called Heather to let her know that she could turn the cams back on.
Dove is likely to be a bit uncomfortable for a few days, so I will be keeping a close eye on her and little Houdini. The vet will be out today again, and possibly tomorrow, to flush her out and make sure all is okay. I will try to get some pics today as well, but it might be tough to do much as all my passwords and stuff are saved on my main computer... I will try to get that to a computer guru today to see what can be salvaged.
