Nou ik ben ook erg blij,heb net de replay van haar bevalling gekeken, kon ik gisteren echt niet.

Eet ze weer goed en is ze niet meer verdoofd?Weet iemand dat ,ik heb haar niet kunnen volgen vandaag.En heb het ook niet echt terug kunnen vinden.

Hoe komt het eigenlijk dat ze dat trauma heeft opgelopen, is de bevalling te zwaar voor haar geweest? Of heeft ze teveel stoffen verloren omdat ze zo vreselijk aan het zweten was?

Ik begreep van Kitten dat het ook kan komen doordat het veulen zo groot is en alle voedingsstoffen van de moeder pikt.Dus de moeder een te kort oploopt.

Ok, maar was dat niet tijdens de dracht merkbaar?
Ik moet wel zeggen dat ik haar wel abnormaal veel vond zweten/stomen tijdens het veulenen, toen dacht ik al dit is toch niet normaal?

Ik werd net verzocht om uitleg te geven op Dar's message board over wat er aan de hand was met Nifty. Ik heb het hieronder gekopieerd. Volgend de DA lijdt (leed) ze aan Eclampsia, oftewel melkziekte. Ik heb het heel vaak gezien bij melkkoeien, nog nooit in een paard. Het is vrij zeldzaam in het paard, en zeker in een paard van Nifty's ras en maat.

If Nifty had a problem with calcium deficiency, then this is what is known as Eclampsia or Milk Fever. It is a condition where the level of calcium in the blood decreases dangerously; usually it happens 7-14 days after giving birth, but it can happen just prior to foaling up until the end of lactation. Milk cows are very predisposed to get this since they are bred to produce a lot of milk. In the horse, it is more common in the draft horse and in the overweight mare.

The signs to look for are: a very agitated mare, followed by a stiff gait and then staggering. Calcium is essential to all muscles, including the heart musculature. The whole body may become rigid at times, followed by periods of relaxation. The heart beat becomes rapid and weak. The mare gets a severe increase in body temperature, sometimes up to 105-106 F.

A very quick test you can do yourself to check for this condition is to shine a penlight into the eye of the mare. Normally the pupil will constrict rapidly, but in case of Eclampsia the pupil will constrict slower. Shine the light into the eye of a healthy horse for comparison (make sure the healthy horse is kept in an area that has comparable lighting to the sick horse, otherwise the comparison will be no good, though!).

The treatment is very simple, but may be dangerous if not done correctly. An IV drip of Calcium gluconate is given while simultaneously listening closely to the heart. If you are treating the mare away from a clinic and don't know exactly how low the calcium level is, then you don't know how much to give. That's where listening to the reaction of the heart beat comes in. Usually an injection of vitamin D will be given as well, since Calcium and vit. D are closely related in the horse's metabolism.

There is some research showing that withdrawing some of the calcium in the feed about 2 weeks prior to anticipated foaling in mares who are predisposed to get Eclampsia, and then adding the calcium back on the day they foal can prevent it.
