Thank you everyone! Lisa Lou did an AWESOME job and boy am i surprised by this filly- she is BIG and gorgeous long neck, great back- big chest.... she is just a doll!

Dit gaat over Larkin

I know its been awhile and many of you are curious as to what happened to our "Larkin". Many of you witnessed his birth and watched him in his few days here on this earth. I felt that I had given it enough time to let you all know what happened.
He was born late on the 8th. He was a HUGE colt that we needed to assist be born. We did everything correctly and in all actuallity it was a text book birth. He pooped and peed like a normal colt and all seemed well.
On the 10th it was my daughters 4th birthday party and there were ALOT of people over. Many of them wanted to see Larkin up close and personal (most too had seen him on the cam). We all went down to ooh and awww over him. We noticed at that time that he was straining to pee. We watched him for a few hours and I put a call into my vet who told me over the phone it sounded like a ruptured bladder. I kept asking her if it could be anything else and she said could be that he is colicy but sounds like the ruptured bladder. My good friend Wendy was here and her sister and brother in law are both Vets in CA and so she called them. They too said they felt it was a ruptured bladder. I called my vet again and she said to administer another enima to be sure he wasn't constipated and give him a shot of banamine. She also told me that we can't really ultra-sound his belly until about the 3rd day as the bladder would continually leak into his abdominal cavity. Ultra sound unfortunetly will only work when the belly is full of urine. So at this point it was a waiting game.
We finally got the shot of banamin into him and he was comfy. It was a for sure thing that he wasn't impacted as we had milk poop in the stall. We went to bed on the 10th hoping for miracles for our little man.
I went down to check on him early on the 11th (a little over 2 days old). He seemed comfortable and looked like he was attempting to nurse. I went down about 2hrs later because he had been sleeping on his side for quite some time. He got up when I got down there and he froze up and fell over backwards into the water bucket. I tried to grab him but he froze and fell again this time into the side of the stall. This time he stayed down. I took off his now wet blanket and saw his abdomen was HUGE swollen along with his little sheath. I ran to the house and called my vet and my friend Jenn (whos mare is here now).
I spent the morning until the vet got there loving on Sweet Pea knowing in a little while she would no longer have her colt. He was up, no more falling over episodes. He showed no interest in nursing and would stretch out to pee but nothing would come out. I haltered Sweet Pea and Jenn held her. She was an angel. Vet tried to grab Larkin and he said no way and fought. She finally got him sedated so she could do a belly tap on him to make sure. My vet was right at Pea's back legs and she never moved. She belly tapped Larkin and her vile filled with urine imediately. There was no question on what we had to do. Surgery would be too expensive for us to have done and its not guarenteed. Not only that sometimes it will take more then one surgery to fix them. Closest facility that could perform the operation was WSU (our college in WA about 2hrs away). I also had to keep my mare in mind as she does not deal well with new situations or new people.
So on that note we put my little man down. It was a hard discision but it was one that we really had no choice. Sweet Pea grived for him but she knew. She has been INCREDIBLY lovey since this all happened. She is drying up but still has aways to go.
Larkin would have been two weeks old yesterday. Time has made it easier and so has the friends I have made along the way. I just have to tell myself that everything happens for a reason. I know his time here was short but he was very much loved during that time. He will always be in our hearts here.
Thank you to everyone who kept him in your thoughts and prayers. He was lucky to have such a fan base at only a few days old.

Saturday morning update.

Missy is pacing in her stall and she keeps turning around and looking at her belly. She doesn't even like me touching her flanks this morning and she isn't eating very well. I will turn her out for a while this afternoon when I'm out in the barn and switch the camera to the arena.

I think she is getting closer!

In case you're wondering why she's circling like crazy right now it's because the mares all went over to the field where our stallion can't see them. He hates when his girls are out of his sight so he hollers to them until they come back. She hears him hollering, that's why she's all worked up.

Unless of course she's in labour. Just kidding, I don't think so. As soon as they come back and he stops hollering she should settle down.

If neone happens to be watching charlot tonight...just so u know my satillite will probably be going down due to some severe thuderstorms rolling thru....it will reconnect its self and the cam will also reconnect its self..
Charlot is aggitated tonight...kicking and flinging her tail around...she still has no wax...but both bags are now really tight and shiney...I don't expect her to go tonight...but u just never know with maidens
