Pffft ik vond een update over het prematuurtje van Apricot op het mb van Freelands:

Apricot and the colt are both at home now. Debi is keeping them in her mud room in the house because the baby can't control his body temp yet. He is eating well and it sounds like he will definitely make it.

Gelukkig wel!

Met de cam van Lucy zijn ze druk bezig, die had last van harde wind leek het wel Nagelbijten / Gniffelen

Lisa Lou lijkt ook niet echt op haar gemak te zijn vanavond...

Als bij Lisa Lou de deur openstaat kan ze niet naar buiten, alleen de frisse lucht kan naar binnen heb ik net op marestare gelezen...

Good Sunday Morning,
I actually started this update yesterday afternoon. We had company right in the middle so when I went back late last night my comp had restarted itself after an auto update. So I lost the entire post and decided to wait til today to redo it.

I've named the little boy SevenAcres Mathew's Wee Casanova since he was born Valentine's Day. We took him in real early Wednesday morning and Christie tubed him. She's the vet who took Vince's place at the Clinic. This has been her first year in full practice. She's been with Clark for 6 years though. He couldn't stand on his legs because they were like noodles. He didn't have a very strong suck reflex either. Casanova is very tiny with no body fat at all. His hair is that of a premie so doesn't do a lot to help him with his body temp. He's still unable to maintain it at normal levels without heat and blankets on. Anyway, here's the info on his progress through the Clinic.

By Wed. afternoon he could stand on his own but still couldn't nurse. They'd gotten him on a bottle by that time and he was sucking it pretty good. Christie took him home with her Wednesday night because they were feeding him once every hour.

Wednesday late evening Christie called and was very concerned abt him. She believed that he was a dummy foal because he didn't appear to see nor would he suckle from Apricot. He'd not made any significant changes either other than standing. I could tell she felt it wasn't in his best interest to continue and wanted me to be prepared. I asked her then if she would give him 24 hours and if she was open for suggestions from me to which she said of course. I told her I'd brought him to them to tube feed and I felt they'd converted him to the bottle too soon. He needed to gain strength which meant all of his energy needed to go towards growing and maturing. I wanted the tube put back in and her feed him through it only til the next day. Then I told her the eye sight would come. That I had two premie babies as well as a couple of foals over the years. They can't adjust at first because their eyes are premature just as the rest of them.

She acted on my suggestions and called me Thursday evening with a report. Casanova had opened her eyes to a new understanding that you couldn't always go by what you were taught. All signs were pointing to his being a dummy foal but after taking my advice he'd shown her in less than 24 hours that wasn't the case. I thanked her for being open to my ideas and then acting on them. She said that I had years more experience than her and it probably wouldn't be the last time she learned abt these Mini's from me. Christie is going to be a wonderful Vet because she is so open and will continue to improve on what she's learned through her years as a Vet Tech, at School and on the job. Thank you very much, Dr Christie and I'm looking forward to working with you over the next years.

Ok, Thursday night Clark took him home with him and extended a couple of his feedings a bit. By Friday afternoon he was ready to come home!

While I was hooking the trailer up my 8 year old great nephew Gabe was helping. He's always such a big help when he's here that I sometimes forget he's only 8. Well, I was off abt half a ball width from the tonque of the trailer falling on. Gabe was pushing it while I pulled to slip it over a bit. When it fell on somehow one of Gabe's fingers was bent over the top of the hitch and he lock pinched part of his finger off. Oh it was just horrible!!!!!! On the way to the emergency room he looked at me with those big brown eyes and said, "Aunt Deb, this is the worst day of my entire life" to which I could certainly relate!! His grandmother Sherry met us there and I ended up having to leave her, his mother and Gabe there so I could go get the horses. By the time I took them home and got em settled Jessica called with an update. It took the finger off to the bone but didn't damage the bone itself. They managed to close the wound but he still may have to have surgery to close it properly. I am telling you there is a negative carma hanging around me! When Clark called Friday night to check on the baby I told him abt Gabe. He said "Debi, remind me not to come out there anytime soon!" Gabe is managing this weekend on pain meds and wants to come spend the night with his Aunt Deb tonight or tomorrow night. I asked if he was going to help me anymore and he said yes after a slight hesitation. I told him that I'd remember he was just a little boy and do my best to prevent him from being hurt again. Poor baby......

Cas is doing really well and we have him feeding entirely on Apricot now. She's being so good & patient with him. He is not out of the woods yet because I know his immunity isn't what it should be due to his prematurity. Barring him developing pnuemonia or other infections he should make it though. He's a very strong little boy already showing his Daddy's spunk!

Ok, the other news is also big. I knew after Cas was born that it would be too difficult to move in the middle of foaling season. But that was only a small part of the decision I made. I don't think that I'm quite emotionally ready to make this step. I do feel that I will make it over the coming year but just now quite yet. I had too many other emotionally charged things going on in my life right now that selling was adding too much pressure. I was in danger of losing all of the ground I'd worked so hard to gain over the last months. I talked to the couple who were buying the house and they were so very good abt understanding. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful people in my life.

This afternoon I am going to get one of the foaling stalls ready with heat lights in it for Cas. He's trying to move around more and doesn't have enough room inside the mud room. I think I can keep the temp up enough now for him out there. He turned the water bowl over sometime this morning and was wet when I got up to check him That worries me because there's no where I can hang a bucket in there so I have to use a feeder bowl. I hope that I caught him in time that he didn't get a chill and will get sick! Anyway, I'll post when I get them on the cam.

Thank you all so very much for your prayers and concern for us. Hopefully the worst that will happen from this latest Clinic visit is more added to my already big vet bill! LOL I can handle that over time but it would have been so difficult on Apricot and I losing one of Mathew's last foals. I appreciate your prayers and positive thoughts more than you can know.
