Hier de update over de geboorte van vannacht bij fields:
OK,
Well. Let's see. Where to start on that one. Scary as heck and not out of the woods yet. Didn't really expect Nikki to go tonight- she was very usual until minutes before she went. Thought Essi on Cam 3 was the "hot" one to watch- she may still be.

Nikki laid down, pushed, rolled and when we got to stall (within minutes) the water had already broken. She was distressed (slightly) and seemed to be asking for directions/help/assistance or something. This is an independent mare who usually wants to be left alone during this process.

She laid down again, we were waiting outside the stall and joking around some about Ella and Thor. Two good pushes and we had a horribly dark red bag coming out- no sign of foal- bag was sticking straight out about 18 inches. I attempted to tear the bag to get to foal and could not begin to open it (if anyone has read Breaking Dawn- you will understand the hardness of this placenta). Amber cut cams, Wayne went for Oxygen, I pulled knife to cut foal out. After cutting thru the red bag, I found normal placenta and two feet. We tore that apart and pulled (super-sonic speed as time is the MOST important factor for us on a red bag). Foal was blue and non-responsive. Wayne had Oxygen turned on and we began to administer it before we had the hips of the foal out. She was sternal (sitting up) and looking pretty good so we milked Nikki and gave the colostrum to the foal. She began to crash a little. At this point, we had our vet on her way (we had already spoken with her immediately following the delivery). We gave more oxygen and vet arrived. We milked Nikki twice and tubed the colostrum to the foal twice. She is a dummy foal. This (by our vet's definition) is a foal who is slow and should become normal but will need assistance nursing and will need constant TLC and Oxygen until she is able to remain oxygenated on her own. She holds her tongue out, cannot nurse on her own at this point, and is slightly impaired (gait) on her left side. This can improve over the next few days until she is normal.

She is a red roan filly. We are delivering the placenta to the lab tomorrow morning to be cultured so that we know why? Nikki is an older mare and COULD have issues with early placental detachment? Don't know yet...

So, another tough one. Keep wishing good thoughts for us- she's a beauty. Also, she and Nikki are ours (Fields Quarter Horses).

Filly was up by about 1:45, Mom up and placenta passed about 2:15 and filly nursed at about 2:30am. I'm going to watch them for a few more minutes, but will then probably try to get a little sleep. Please note if you see the filly up and nursing and don't hesitate to call if you see something that doesn't seem right.

Veulen is volop aan het uitzoeken hoe die stelten werken

Merrie was aan het rollen en schrapen daarjuist, maar lijkt nu wel rustig.

Beth and I just went in to check on our girl, she has been pacing and walking not standing in one spot to long, and there was loose poo in her stall, looser than last night..also when Beth checked her utter, she has colostrum that comes out to the touch..we are getting there, at least I hope so..have my finger on the high alert button, stand tune..M
