UPDATE FIRST MARE @ ELEMENTS - UNKNOW DUE DATE!

Well, our new mares arrived yesterday, along with one that was sold, but leased back. They all arrived wonderful, happy, and healthy!

One of the new girls, Dove, is due sometime soon but we don't know EXACTLY when! Here are the facts about what we know:

1. Dove is a "ho" mare and will let a stallion breed her even when she is already pregnant.
2. A long yearling stud colt got loose with her last year for a day in late February/early March (previous owner couldn't remember exact date)
3.Dove then left on a lease and went to a farm in March where she lived with a different stallion until about the end of June.
5. In July, the vet palpated her and said not pregnant.
6. We buy mare, look at photos, and ask for her to be ultrasounded when the vet is out to pull blood for travel papers. Vet says mare VERY pregnant, foal is "fawn-sized" and most likely due in Feb. sometime.
7. Dove arrives last night, we let her settle in, then this morning check underneath an lo and behold, she is about half bagged up already!

SO... we will most likely switch the camera over to her starting sometime today as Shiraz is not due until late February and has not even STARTED to bag yet. We would very much appreciate any and all help watching her! We will check with Heather about updating our camera page to include one of those handy scrolling text boxes with information about the horse on camera and how to reach us.

Ik heb dove ook meteen aangezet..
Missy en midnight staan zoiezo op mijn scherm aan..
Die 2 kunnen je vreselijk voor de gek houden en je slapeloze nachten bezorgen..

STARLIGHT RANCH JAN 3, MORNING UPDATE

All is quiet and doing well on the home front. Missy is not a happy girl at all, she is very uncomfortable. I also found this morning she was favoring her left hind foot. I checked her close for any warmth on her hip and down her leg. I then cleaned out her hoof and did not find anything. I think she might have sprained it last night out playing with the girls but don't see anything major. Missy's bag is continuing to grow but at this point has not let down milk so we still have time.

Midnight continues to be in a holding pattern so no progress with her at the moment. Lisa Lou continues to make changes but we still have at least four weeks if not more before she goes. Missy is the one we are monitoring the closest since she seems to be making steady progress.

It's very wet and raining hear today, but looks like another cold snap is on it's way for the weekend. Have a great day everyone!!!

UPDATE MARES SAWYER CREEK APPALOOSAS

Nothing to get too excited over so far but of course Rose and Brooke are maidens so I'm not taking anything for granted. Rose looks the farther along of the two and of course she is technically due the 12th and Brooke the 15th based on their last breeding dates. You can't take that to the bank though as it is always possible the actual conception occurred shortly before or after the last time they were covered. I say Rose is farther along as her teats are now more conical shaped. Her colostrum as of last night was still amber colored and not readily available. She's still not very lose at the tail head either. She had been uncomfortable- pushing the wall with her butt and rubbing, biting at her side from time to time and giving other pain responses. Brooke's teats are not filled out though she is quite a bit bigger in size belly wise than Rose. In fact, poor Brooke is HUGE! We'll see if my prediction holds out that Brooke has a colt and Rose has a filly. Brooke is also very uncomfortable though not showing the pain responses as often as Rose. I turn them out together in the arena twice a day while I am working so I can monitor them. They both are rather lazy and uncomfortable at this point though Rose has been unusually affectionate. As for predictions....since these girls have no track record I'm just playing it a day at a time.
Our new mare should be arriving soon. I am a bit worried for whatever good it will do, about her hauling so close to her due date. There is some comfort in that when we saw her she had no signs of teat developement and her Jan. 26 due date was calculated on 335 as opposed to our calculations of 340-342.
Ruby is due the 8th of Feb. and Bonnie the 17th. Both are showing some minor teat developement. I suspect Bonnie will go before her date. Ruby will probably be right on schedule. In another week or so, they will get their turn out in the arena as opposed to the pasture in preparation.
As for the rest of the girls, they are just hanging out. They spend their days in the two pastures behind the barn. The weather has been spectacular. Today is in the 40s with a bright sun. Our lawn still has green in it!
So far, so good!

STARLIGHT RANCH JAN 3, EVENING Afbeelding

Missy seems to have brused her frog last night when out in pasture. We soaked this evening in Epson salts just incase she has an absess. Then wrapped and put a padding on the frog. This seemed to help because she put full weight on her foot.

Missy bag is also loosening up and starting to fill even more. Tonight I was able to easily get some clear liquid out of both tits. This is a great sign but still feel we are a few days to a week off.

Midnight has made no further progress so is more than likely on track for closer to her foaling date in early February.

Lisa Lou is the same that she was last night. Hoping she is in a holding pattern for a while since she is not due until the end of February.

Her udders are full, I couldn't get any milk out, but she has something in there.... She looks all set and ready when her baby decides it is time. Won't be much longer, we'll get to see her tiny secret she's been hiding from us.
