Jeetje, de kleine van Reffy heeft het ook niet gered Verdrietig

Um..I don't know how to say it any other way, but I need to update--Pip was euthanized at 9:50 this morning. His kidneys failed and there wasn't a chance of recovery. The normal is 1.3-3 and tuesday he was at 6-7, today his bloodtest said he was at a 12. his veins were shot and he couldn't hold an IV. Knape did everything he could and more, but he laid down this morning and wouldn't wake up again so we made the decision to go ahead and put him to sleep instead of letting him fade out.

Reffy is still being flushed and will be home when she passes the rest of her placenta. She seemed sad but I think she understood. He left Pip's body in the stall with her so she would know he was gone and wouldn't flip out if we took him away.

I'm very happy Reffy and I got to spend these past 5 (heart wrenching) days with him and I'm happy now that he has moved on to a place where he can run and play to his hearts desire.

I don't know if now is the right time to put this out there but after watching poor Roux I just want to say that as long as Reffy is producing milk then I'm offering her as a nurse mare for a foal who may need a mother. She really took motherhood in stride and I feel so bad for her having him taken away so young. I'm going to talk to my vet about it when he gets back from a farm call, but as of right now that's what I'd like to do with her. We also plan to breed her this year as soon as is healthy for her. Next time this won't happen. We've decided to leave her at the vet when she's close, just in case.

I almost feel like I know should blame myself, but strangely I know we did everything we could and though mistakes were made, I refuse to beat myself up about this. It just wasn't meant to be and though it's been the hardest learning experience of my life, I will never forget a single step we took to save little Pip's life-and I'm positive this experience will come in handy in saving either a foal of mine later on, or maybe someone elses. It's been tough on everyone involved and I will forever be in debt to those who prayed and helped try and save Pip's life.

Also-please keep the registered names coming. I'm going to check with AQHA and see if I can't still register him and give him a written memory in her history.---I don't know if I said that right, but I know what I'm feeling about it and I don't know if I can explain it (like so many other things).

My thoughts are scattered but I hope I said everything right and I hope I xplained to the best of my ability. I want to thank everyone for the prayers and thank you Lisa for helping me throughout this whole thing.

wat erg allemaal!!!
wat had pip dan? te vroeg geboren? hij zag er ook niet zo levenslustig uit op de foto's zo te zien, arm beestje....

Ik vond nog een stukje toen hij net geboren was

When we got to the vet (that's a good place to start, right?) He was pretty sure the baby was dead and our hopes were to save Reffy. Once she was in the stocks he was about to check out what was going on in there and she started pushing again and out came one foot-then a nose right near it's "ankle". He then felt for the next foot, luckily it was right there and after a bit of pulling and some fabulous pushing from Reffy, out came a very limp looking baby. I could have sworn I noticed his lip move-Knape noticed it too. Then our priority was to get him breathing-after a bit of CPR he started breathing-then fighting. He wanted to live. He fought to live.

After some steroid injections (for any fluid that may have gotten in his lungs), lots of rubbing and a tiresome fight to keep him laying down we moved them in to a stall and she started playing mom right away. He wanted to get up so bad, I'm sure he's still trying.

Now-What went wrong?
Her placenta didn't break off like it was supposed to. That kept him alive, had it of broken like normal he woud have suffocated within 20 minutes of her water breaking. He wasn't stretched out like he was supposed to be but was in the right position-just scrunched up and too "thick" to push out.

I realize there are so many things I did wrong and soooo much I was unprepared for-but in a very weird way being unprepared helped keep him alive. I tried to explain it to my mom but she didn't get it and I'm not sure if I can really explain it any better to anyone else. It's hard to explain what happened, but that's the best way I can really say it... My thoughts are all over the place and I'm sure I should save this for in the AM, but after ready all of the prayers I wanted to share my learning experience the best I could while it's still very fresh in my mind. I'm certain we would have lost the foal had it not of been for the clear thinking people around me and for my fantastic vet who tried so hard first to keep my mare alive-and then ended up saving our little angel.
