THE GREAT STALLION SMART LITTLE LENA WAS A WINNER... AND A WEENIE
The great stallion Smart Little Lena chased butterflies, played with Gismo, a Jack Russell Terrier, spooked like a weenie at surprises, and if he could catch his rider unaware, often tossed in a little bucking - all in the name of fun. It was this riotous personality that captured the hearts of those around him and it is all told in the 235-page coffee table edition Smart Little Lena, the Grand Slam Years.
While his playfulness made Smart Little Lena an entertainer, it was his riveting performances that made him a champion. Born late and born small, the stallion ignored the strikes against him to become the first National Cutting Horse Association Triple Crown Champion. His quick-draw movements sucked many a cow into a trap and brought screaming crowds to their feet. Later he added another exceptional championship to that list, making it a grand slam for the Quarter Horse stallion.
All those stories and more are featured in the book written by well-known author and columnist Gala Nettles. Gala is married to cutting horse trainer and Hall of Famer Ronnie Nettles, and lives daily amid the rich field in which Smart Little Lena succeeded. Besides pinning columns and articles for numerous magazines, she has written 16 other books including Bill Freeman: Training the Horse and Rider, ($34.95) the best cutting instructional book on the market and Fame & Glory, the First Decade of NCHA Futurities (34.95), a goldmine of equine history about the birth of the Futurity and its struggle to become a first-class event.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the NCHA Futurity Gala has coupled these two books with Smart Little Lena, the Grand Slam Years to offer a priceless 3-for-1 package for history buffs and those interested in the art of cutting. These 3 books are available through December 31 - or until the limited supply runs out - for a remarkable price of $89.95 plus shipping. Smart Little Lena can be purchased singly for $39.95 plus shipping.
