English person in need of help!

Link naar dit bericht Geplaatst door de TopicStarter : 30-09-08 14:29

Hi, I'm new on the forums and relatively new to the Dutch horse community. I got my KWPN girl (Penny) in February and we've been working on things at home. However, I know want to get her out competing specifically showjumping but am getting more and more confused as to what we need to do in order to be able to register and compete. I've found a riding club down the road I can register with for the low level stuff but then need to get KNHS membership on top of that.

But then I get really confused. How do start coupons work? What are the dress rules for showjumping both for horse and rider (I'd hear somewhere only specific types of boots are allowed). I also heard that you have to have a number of points in dressage before you can compete in showjumping but really am totally confused about how I get from where I am now to actually being out there and competing. Any information at all would be really appreciated Lachen

Also, is it possible to hire lorries that take 2 horses that you can drive on a new license (up to 3.5 tonnes)? And if so does anyone know somewhere in the Rotterdam area that does this?

Cookies for getting this far and thanks for any help.

Hi Kate,

Actually you've to become member of a horse riding club and then ask them to make you a member of the KNHS. Then you need a "startkaart", they've to send your name, dob etc. and also copies of your horses pasport to the KNHS. Then they can ask at the same time for "startcoupons", you need 1 for every start and you've got 2 different kinds, for dressage and jumping. You need to have 1 winstpunt in dressage and then you can start competion with jumping. You get a winstpunt when you've got 180 points or more at dressage (with 195 you even get 2). A winstpunt at dressage lasts your whole life and you can start jumping with any horse.

You need to wear an approved safety cap and boots or chaps. Riding trousers and a jacket.

But maybe attend some lessons at the riding club nearby you (I don't know your level of riding), and probably you can ask other members everything you want to know. And make some new friends at the same time Haha!

good luck with your riding

OK, that makes a bit more sense now. So how do you get the dressage points? 180 sounds like a lot or is that only a few placings you need to get that (dressage isn't our strong point - we like the jumping).

Also, once you've bought the startcoupons do you then have to pay additionally to enter competitions or are these basically your entry fee?

180 points is a 60% score on the dressage test. The tests on B-level are quite basic. Transitions walk-trot-canter and some cirkels. You're horse has to be in an outline to score points.

You have to pay additionally to enter competitions Lachen

I think it works if you visit some competions of your local riding club to see how the level is in dressage. At the same time you can check out the dress-code Knipoog

Hi Kate,

180 does sound alot but in fact it isnt that hard.
With a bit of luck and decent riding it will probably only take you 1 start on a competition.
As for clothing it does have rules. Your only allowed to ride in black or dark blue. Jumping is a bit more free in colors.

I also suggest you hook up with a local riding club, they will be able to show and explain you everything including where to rent a trailer.

Good Luck!!

About the lorries, do you mean a trailer? There are trailers available for 2 horses. What do you mean by "new licence"? (is your driver's licence English?). You could ask a random police officer if you are allowed to ride with a lorry and two horses, but what's important is:

* In Holland you have to have a BE licence for that kind of tonnage, I don't know what's it like with foreign drivers' licences.
* Your car has to be fit to pull that kind of weight.
* The lorry has to have a permit to carry the load of horses you want to transport.

I think it's quickest to ask in the policestation, tell them what kind of car you drive, show them your licence and note down the data on the lorry.

HannahFrouk: a lorrie is something different as a trailer.

In most area's it's possible to rent trailers as wel as lorries for 2 horses. There are also horsetaxi's.

a score of 180 is 60%
The level is "B dressage", so just simple exercises. This is to prevent that riders that have to little control over their horse start competing (this could be dangerous). Did you already reach a level in your homeland?

I'm very impressed that you have to prove the control of your horse before you're allowed to compete. In the UK there is nothing to stop you going to the top level of showjumping without ever entering a dressage arena!

I will check out the competitions close to me and see what kind of standard that is. Think we can manage the basics as long as Penny decides to pay attention for long enough Knipoog

And yes, lorries are the all in one transport (vrachtwagon I think in Dutch). I only have a B license so can't pull a trailer but I can drive a small lorry that can take 2 horses. I just can't find anywhere that hires them.

Thank you for all the information, its very helpful Lachen

You can rent a lorry, which isn't that cheap, but there are more options. You could get a 'paardentaxi' (horse cab) - also expensive - or you could just rent a trailer, provided that your car is suitable for towing a horse box. This depends on the specs of the trailer and the towing car, so I can't tell you any more right now. However, it's not always necessary to have a B-E license, but that again depends on the car - trailer combination.
