Citaat:Dr. Charlie Buchanan Talks About EHV-1 in Texas
Dr. Charlie Buchanan, of Brazos Valley Equine Hospital, has confirmed a case of EHV-1 in Parker County, Texas, home to some of the greatest cutting horses and the cutting capital of the world. The infected horse was in attendance at the NCHA Western Nationals in Ogden, Utah, that ran from April 29-May 8.
“We have one horse that we are currently treating in Parker County,” Buchanan said on the evening of Wednesday, May 18. “The horse was in Ogden. It came back and we tested it more as screening than anything else because it was not symptomatic. It had a positive PCR test, so we have started it on some anti-viral medication, but at this time, the horse is not symptomatic.”
The PCR tests detects the absence or presence of viral DNA and differentiates neuropatholgenic equine herpesvirus-1 from non-neuropathogenic EHV-1. A horse that is not showing symptoms of the virus can shed the virus and potentially give it to other horses.
Buchanan is advising all of his clients, whether they attended Ogden or not, to stay at home.
“We haven’t figured out where all the horses are that have been exposed and the horses that have been exposed can possibly expose other horses. The smart thing to do is stay at home. Don’t go anywhere unless it is absolutely necessary. If you think a horse has been exposed take its temperature twice a day. Don’t share water buckets, don’t allow nose-to-nose contact, don’t share bits between horses unless you disinfect them.”
Veterinarians in the area are in close contact and sharing information on care and potential cases.
“We all share notes once or twice a day,” Buchanan said. “Stay alert; things change minute to minute. As of this morning, there were no confirmed cases in Texas, and now there is at least one and possibly two. Avoid large gatherings of horses.”
