Engeland, New Forest pony's staart half afgeknipt

Afgelopen week ben ik in Engeland op vakantie geweest en eindelijk eens een klein stuk van het New Forest gebied kunnen zien.

Eén van de dingen die me opviel is dat bij sommige pony's de staart half afgeknipt was. Niet ingekort tot een korte staart, maar van de helft van de staart een stuk afgeknipt en de andere helft lang gelaten. Waarom is dat?

Hoe houden ze het ras zuiver? Er liepen ook bonte dieren rond

Helaas te weinig tijd om me uitgebreid in te lezen bij het toeristisch informatiecentrum in Lyndhurst, maar wie kan me meer vertellen over de ponykuddes? Of waar kan ik meer informatie vinden over hoe het fokbeleid gevoerd wordt in zo'n groot gebied?

Wikipedia: Tail hair of the ponies is trimmed, and cut into a recognisable pattern to show that the pony's grazing fees have been paid for the year. Each Agister has his own "tail-mark", indicating the area of the Forest where the owner lives.

Ponies living full-time on the New Forest are almost all mares, although there are also a few geldings. For much of the year the ponies live in small groups, usually consisting of an older mare, her daughters, and their foals, all keeping to a discrete area of the Forest called a "haunt." Under New Forest regulations, mares and geldings may be of any breed. Although the ponies are predominantly New Foresters, other breeds such as Shetlands and their crossbred descendants may be found in some areas.[5]

Stallions must be registered New Foresters, and are not allowed to run free all year round on the Forest. They normally are turned out only for a limited period in the spring and summer, when they gather several groups of mares and youngstock into larger herds and defend them against other stallions. A small number (usually fewer than 50) are turned out,[42] generally between May and August. This ensures that foals are born neither too early (before the spring grass is coming through), nor too late (as the colder weather is setting in and the grazing and browsing on the Forest is dying back) in the following year."

Ik was wel nieuwsgierig, dus ik dacht: ik ga eens ff kijken of ik het antwoord kan vinden.

De New Forest staat nog op mijn wensenlijstje. Was het mooi?

We hebben er helaas maar één dagje rondgewandeld en wat rondgereden met de auto, maar wat we gezien hebben aan de noordkant tijdens de Ashley Walk was prachtig

. Mijn man geloofde niet dat de dieren daar vrij los lopen op straat, dus keek zijn ogen uit (met het raam van de auto dicht

)
Uiteraard veel pony's, ezels en koeien gezien maar op afstand ook herten en grijze eekhoorns.
Ik wil hier absoluut nog eens heen

Hmm, ik zou haast de auto pakken en vertrekken als ik het zo lees! Lijkt me echt schitterend.
