My haflingers

Link naar dit bericht Geplaatst door de TopicStarter : 30-12-10 22:52

I have had a haflinger mare and foal since September. I love haflingers. <3 The mare was a rescue case and I've made a little film of her if anyone is interested.

I do enjoy this website and just wish I could read most it :o . There just isn't an english speaking website that has so many haflinger fans or so many threads just about haflingers! :D

Gosh, thank you all for the lovely replies!

Stef- yes it is the mare we talked about, Tamira Van 'T Leefdaalhof, bred by Steurs Ludo in Belgium. She was imported into the UK 2 or 3 years ago and left in a breeding herd in a large field (she may have had a foal at 3yrs of age). The herd was not given the food or care that horses need, a few mares were very thin and so was the stallion. We then had a hard summer when the grass did not grow so no hay for winter and fortunately the breeder decided to sell most of them.

Tamira (now called Hattie) had awful feet probably untouched since she arrived and she hadn't been handled at all - poor thing. The foal (Gilda) was quite wild but had been drinking from the mum so quite fat.

The sire of her foal is an imported american Stallion (who was also very thin with this breeder), his name is Willis JPH, his old owner in the US sent me these photos,
http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/sha ... :775494953

He is registered in the US (or was) but because his grandmother was a part bred arab (Blue Domino being the arab line), he cannot be registered with the UK Society and the foal is registered as a part bred. Apparently two haflinger mares with 25% arab blood were imported into the US in the 80's and registered as full bred, they then went on to produce many champion lines before the problem was discovered so the US haflinger Society decided to allow all the descendants to remain, but they do not like to talk about it!!

Zidore - there are a few haflingers in the UK, but I do not personally know any others near me. There is an annual breed show but too far for me to travel to easily (with a horse).

When Hattie had put on weight I stated to back her, bareback at first and then this was the second time with a saddle on - she was a star! so it is a very dull video.

By the way, her tail was eaten by the foal.

And if you want to know something you don't understand at bokt.nl, i can translate it for you, if you want. My english is not perfect, but i think it's good enough to understand. :)

Thank you :D

I think she is now getting a little fat as I can hardly feel her ribs! I can't wait to move forwards with her schooling.

If any of you know her breeder Ludo Steurs (his son is Ivan Steurs), I'd love to know more about her start in life. I have his address but feel a bit awkward sending a letter. :o . I must make myself write one.
