`I’m no hero,’ says Prince Harry
PRINCE HARRY arrived home from Afghanistan yesterday insisting he was “no hero” and pointing to two badly wounded soldiers who returned on the same aircraft as “the real heroes”.
His forced extraction from war-ravaged Helmand province raises new doubts about his future in the army. He will be bitterly disappointed not just at his early withdrawal from frontline operations but also at the insistence of General Sir Richard Dannatt, the head of the army, that there is no “immediate prospect” of him going “anywhere else” for at least 18 months.
The prince has made it clear that he will not stay in uniform unless he can serve alongside his men. He is unlikely to be happy with a single token deployment while they are repeatedly sent to battle.
He insisted yesterday that he planned to stay but added that he had already told his commanding officer that he wanted to go back on operations “very, very soon”.

“I know there’s a lot of people thinking, ‘Well, you’ve done it once. Now you’ve got the medal why would you ever want to go back again?’ ” he said.
“At the end of the day, if you’re not there and someone from your regiment or a mate of yours, if something were to happen to them, realistically you would feel indirectly guilty.”
His aircraft flew into RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire late yesterday morning after stopping off in Birmingham to allow the two soldiers seriously wounded in a landmine explosion to be taken to the military ward at the city’s Selly Oak hospital. “I’m no more a hero than anyone else. If you think about it, there’s thousands and thousands of troops out there,” the 23-year-old prince said.
The bravery he had seen among his fellow troops had been “humbling”. “There were two injured guys who came back on the plane with us who were essentially comatose throughout the whole way,” he said. “One had lost two limbs – a left arm and a right leg – and another guy who was saved by his mate’s body being in the way but took shrapnel to the neck.
“Those are the heroes. Those were guys who had been blown up by a mine that they had no idea about, serving their country, doing a normal patrol. It is a bit of a choke in your throat because you know that it’s happening.”
His safe arrival back in the UK coincided with increased rocket attacks on the British base at Basra in southern Iraq in which an RAF airman was killed. The Ministry of Defence did not release his name but said relatives had been informed.
The Prince of Wales, who was at Brize Norton together with Prince William, said he was “enormously proud” of his younger son and now understood what the families and loved ones of soldiers endured when they were serving abroad. “As you can imagine it’s obviously a great relief as far as I’m concerned to see him home in one piece,” Prince Charles said. “I know what it’s like when they’re so far away and it’s much worse in a way for those left behind.”
He was speaking as the MoD confirmed that Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, would also be sent on operations abroad, albeit on board ship while serving with the Royal Navy. “It’s our intention to give Prince William as full a taste of life in the Royal Navy as possible,” a spokesman said.
Prince Harry said his brother would have loved to be deployed in Afghanistan and was “jealous” that Harry had beaten him to it. “I know he’d love to, whether it’s on the ground or whether it’s 15,000ft up, bombs strapped to the wings,” he said.
If William does serve on military operations abroad and goes on to become king, he will be the first monarch to have taken part in full military action since King George VI, who served as a naval officer at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
Prince Harry worked on the front line as a forward air controller, directing coalition air attacks onto Taliban targets. At one point, he was filmed firing a heavy machinegun at Taliban insurgents across a 500-yard stretch of no-man’s-land at Garmsir, in southern Helmand.
When the news leaked out that he was in Afghanistan, he was leading a two-vehicle armoured reconnaissance detachment as part of a USled assault on a Taliban base near Musa Qala. Seated in the turret of a Spartan armoured reconnaissance vehicle, he was directing attacks by French air force Mirage ground attack aircraft called up at the request of US commanders. Neither the US commanders nor the French pilots knew who he was.
He admitted to being “slightly disappointed” his deployment was over. “I thought I could see it through to the end and come back with our guys and the colonel himself. But I’m back here now and I suppose deep down inside it’s quite nice, I’m looking forward to having a bath. But no, I would like to have stayed.”
His efforts were praised yesterday by Gordon Brown. “The whole country is going to be delighted that Prince Harry has come back safely. We are very grateful to him for all the work he has done in Afghanistan, very grateful to all the soldiers in Afghanistan,” he said.
However, the publicity about his service in Afghanistan has already led police to review his personal security amid threats from Islamic militants. It makes it unlikely he will enjoy the same freedom as before, openly attending West End night clubs.

Bridgend teenager found hanged on washing line had been binge-drinking
A teenager from Bridgend was found hanging from a stranger’s washing line after drinking heavily with friends the night before, an inquest was told yesterday.
Zachary Barnes, 17, had twice the drink-drive limit of alcohol in his blood when his body was found.
The teenager is one of 17 young people from the South Wales town suspected of killing themselves in the past year. But Philip Walters, the Bridgend Coroner, said at yesterday’s inquest that Zachary had drunk so much alcohol that he could not return a simple suicide verdict.
Ricky Tovey, a friend of the teenager, told the hearing that on the night before his death they had been drinking and, though he did not seem different that night, he remembered seeing Zachary with a T-shirt around his neck on a wall.
Mr Tovey told the inquest that they had bought 24 cans of Carlsberg lager between them on August 10 last year. He said they had gone with four other friends to a recreation centre at about 6.45pm and stayed there drinking until 12.40am. They then walked to the Brackla area, he said, where they stole a pint from a pub and were chased up the street. After that they went on to a fried chicken takeaway place but ran off again when the police turned up, he said.
Mr Tovey told the inquest that he had been quite drunk and didn’t remember anything else that night.
A police officer told the inquest that the force had received a call from a resident to say they had found a person on his knees hanging from their washing line by a T-shirt. PC Donna Mason said that she identified the body as that of Zachary from photos given to her by his family.
Alan Martin Rees, who carried out the post-mortem examination, said that Zachary died of asphyxia. Dr Rees said that the teenager had twice the drink-drive limit of alcohol in his blood and three times the limit in his urine, which suggested that he had drunk a lot more.
Responding to a question from Zachary’s family as to whether he would have suffered, Dr Rees said it was likely that he had lost consciousness very rapidly. The coroner said that he could not return a verdict of simple suicide. “To find a verdict of suicide I have to find clear evidence of intention for someone to take their own life. In the ones I have done over the years involving this level of alcohol I have never been convinced that is the case. Alcohol affects your judgment.”
Recording his verdict, the coroner said: “Zachary Barnes killed himself while under the influence of alcohol.”
The funeral of Nathaniel Pritchard, another young person suspected of taking his own life in the town, will be held today at Coychurch Crematorium, Bridgend. An inquest was told last week that Nathaniel, 15, from Cefn Glas, Bridgend, was found hanging after telling his former girlfriend that he was going to kill himself. His cousin, Kelly Stephenson, 20, was found hanging within hours of his death.

3.Arsenal saved in nick of time
Arsenal 1 Aston Villa 1
Arsène Wenger insisted last night Arsenal were still favourites to win the Premier League, but acknowledged that Manchester United’s momentum was such that everybody else expected the title to remain at Old Trafford. For the second week in succession, the league leaders dropped two points and can now feel United’s breath hotter than ever on their anxious necks. It could have been worse, much worse. Eight days after conceding a winning position to a last-minute penalty, Arsenal got out of jail with a Nicklas Bendtner equaliser in stoppage time. This time it was Aston Villa who were left stunned after leading for more than an hour. Wenger and his team were left clinging by their fingernails to pole position in the title race, a solitary point ahead of rampant United after another disappointing performance and result.
Villa stretched their unbeaten run in the league to 12 games and were in front after 27 minutes courtesy of a Phillipe Senderos own goal. They were desperately close to maintaining that advantage for a notable win with 92 minutes on the stopwatch when Bendtner, on as substitute, drove the ball into Scott Carson’s right-hand corner from six yards. Arsenal, visibly relieved at the final whistle, were as lacklustre as they had been at Birmingham last weekend, and know they will have to do a lot better if they are to overcome Milan in the San Siro in Tuesday’s Champions League return. Wenger said: “There was a hangover from last week, definitely. What got us a point today was our desire and refusal to lose. We need to get our injured players back, especially Robin van Persie. He will be in the squad for Milan, but he won’t start.”
Villa were unlucky in more ways than one. Much, probably too much, has been made by Wenger of the rough treatment his players receive and the lack of protection they are afforded by referees. It ought to have been chastening, then, that it was the opposition who lost two men in the first half, with Curtis Davies carried off on a stretcher with a ruptured Achilles, to be followed by Nigel Reo-Coker with back trouble. Davies is to miss the remainder of the season. Villa manager Martin O’Neill said: “Getting picked by [England manager]Fabio Capello gave Curtis a big boost of confidence and this is really unfortunate.”
It is to O’Neill’s credit that Villa reorganised so effectively, with Martin Laursen outstanding at centre-back, where he shut out Emmanuel Adebayor. Gareth Barry was Herculean in midfield and the pacy Gabriel Agbonlahor looked every inch an England player in waiting, stretching the Arsenal defence throughout. In the stricken Edu-ardo’s absence, Theo Walcott was preferred to Bendtner as Adebayor’s attacking partner.
Villa were at full strength and exuded the confidence that comes from a run of good results. Arsenal would have had the lift of an early goal but for a notable save by Carson, who flew to his right to repel a goalbound drive from Walcott. Agbonlahor was soon causing problems, leaving Senderos on his backside before delivering a testing cross from the right that deserved a better fate than Shaun Maloney’s maladroit first touch at the far post. Senderos’s afternoon went from bad to worse as he turned in an Agbonlahor cross from the left at the near post. Walcott was as quick and penetrative as Agbonlahor and a sprint down the right might have produced the equaliser but his cross was laid off by Adebayor to Fabregas, who scooped his shot over the bar.
Dissatisfied with his team’s first-half performance, Wenger started the second with Walcott wide on the right and Alexander Hleb playing off Adebayor. Villa, however, remained well organised and resilient, and Manuel Almunia had to pull off the best save of the match after 54 minutes to keep out Ashley Young’s strong, low drive. Arsenal must have thought it was not to be their day when, with time running out, Adebayor headed over from three yards, but with virtually the last kick Bendtner snatched a point from the jaws of defeat.
Wenger emphasised the importance of the goal. “It would have shredded our confidence if we’d lost today,” he said. “I think the point will have a big impact on the outcome of the league. I know for neutral observers we will not be the favourites any more, that Manchester United will be, but we are still top and I’m still confident that we can do it.” Both managers expressed contempt for a chant from the Villa fans in sick reference to Eduardo’s badly broken leg. Wenger said: “It looks like stupidity has no limits.” O’Neill said: “I’m desperately disappointed to hear that.
