Mechanical Shutter = best results. Unless Shutter Shock is a risk (on the R5 the risk of Shutter Shock occurs at shots under 1/250 sec and on the R6 is it rarer but can potentially occur at under 1/160 sec). Mechanical Shutter produces the best bokeh and is the best choice for action photography with higher shutter speeds. Most photographers prefer to use Mechanical Shutter most of the time and for images taken above 1/160 sec you should never have an issue with it. I have shot at 1/40 sec and LOWER with Mechanical Shutter on the R6 without any problems. Mechanical Shutter presents a bigger risk to higher megapixel cameras like the R5.
EFCS (Electronic First Curtain Shutter) = will mostly cancel out any potential for Shutter Shock but has an impact on the Bokeh from wide aperture lenses (eg f/1.2 shots will look like they were taken at f/1.4 and f/1.4 lenses may look like they were taken with f/1.6 lenses). Canon ship the R5 and R6 cameras with EFCS set as the default setting. Shutter Shock is really only an issue for mirrrorless cameras with IBIS (R6/R5). With EFCS, only one shutter curtain falls to "end" the exposure after the camera starts recording the image with an Electronic exposure. This means the first Curtain doesn't slam down first, resulting in enough vibration of the suspended IBIS mechanism to cause it to shake and then blur the image. It's really only useful to prevent vibrations between say 1/4 - 1/10 sec and higher (up to 1/160 sec). Below this exposure time and above it, EFCS won't make much difference.
Electronic (Silent) shutter = 20 fps and completely silent. Great for funerals and wildlife and potential stalkers. Note that the Bit-rate is reduced to 12-Bit instead of 14-Bit when shooting RAW. Rolling Shutter artifacts and banding under pulsating LED or Fluorescent lighting may be a problem. Note that for sporting events or fast moving wildlife, the Electronic Shutter is capable of severed distortion.
Zie dat er inmiddels al steeds meer Bokkers over zijn gestapt van DSLR naar MILC.
