haha!

* Clinique
- Comforting Cream Cleanser [++$$]
Comforting Cream Cleanser is an excellent, lotion-type cleanser for normal to dry skin that is close to being water-soluble, but still requires the use of a washcloth for complete removal. This would be an option for normal to dry or sensitive skin, and it is truly fragrance and irritant-free. Clinique claims you can tissue this off, but is anyone still using tissues to remove their cleanser? If they are, they should stop!
- Facial Soap (extra mild, mild en oily skintype) [-]
Extra Mild en Mild: Facial Soap Extra Mild may be mild, but it’s still standard bar soap and as such can be needlessly drying and irritating to skin. If you prefer bar cleansers, Dove’s original Beauty Bar is actually a better formulation.
Oily: Facial Soap Oily contains a high amount of menthol and sodium borate, both of which are irritating to skin.
- Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild [++!!]
Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild is not necessarily water-soluble due to its oil content, but it is an excellent option for someone with dry to very dry skin. A true lotion cleanser, it does not contain any detergent cleansing agents, and so is actually a smart choice for someone with sensitive or easily irritated skin (and infinitely better for skin than any of Clinique’s bar soaps). The oil content helps dissolve makeup, including mascara, but you’ll need a washcloth for complete removal. One nice touch is the anti-irritants, although they are not as beneficial here as they are in leave-on products.
- Liquid Facial Soap Mild Formula[++!!]
Liquid Facial Soap Mild Formula is a standard, but good, water-soluble cleanser for normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin. Despite its name, it is completely soap-free, and contains gentle but effective detergent cleansing agents and skin-smoothing skin-identical ingredients to prevent skin from feeling dry or tight. It is also completely fragrance-free and does a good job removing makeup.
- Liquid Soap Oily Formula [-]
Liquid Facial Soap Oily Skin Formula is similar to the Liquid Facial Soap Mild Formula, but loses points for the senseless inclusion of menthol. This irritant has no benefit for skin, oily or not. What a shame, because without the menthol this would have been a slam-dunk recommendation for normal to oily skin.
- Clarifying Lotion nr. 1 [-]
Clarifying Lotion 1 lists alcohol as the second ingredient, and that makes this toner too irritating for all skin types. The alcohol this contains will trigger oil production in the pore lining.
- Clarifying Lotion nr. 2 [-]
Clarifying Lotion 2 is an alcohol-based toner that also contains witch hazel and menthol. The Clinique salespeople may claim that the alcohol is “cosmetics-grade,” which sounds nice but doesn’t make this product any less irritating. The alcohol this contains will trigger oil production in the pore lining.
- Clarifying Lotion nr. 3 [-]
Clarifying Lotion 3 is similar to Clarifying Lotion 2, but with less alcohol and no menthol. It’s still way too irritating and drying, even for oily skin. The alcohol this contains will trigger oil production in the pore lining.
- Clarifying Lotion nr. 4 [-]
Clarifying Lotion 4 is nearly identical to Clarifying Lotion 3, and the same review applies: it's way too irritating and drying for all skin types (including very oily skin). The alcohol this contains will trigger oil production in the pore lining, making oily skin worse than it was before using this product.
- Mild Clarifying Lotion (die zonder nr!) [+]
Mild Clarifying Lotion puts all of Clinique’s other Clarifying Lotions to shame with its alcohol-free formula that contains 0.5% salicylic acid at an effective pH of 2.9. Although a higher concentration of salicylic acid would be more effective for someone battling blemishes and blackheads, this is a step in the right direction and contains some very good skin-identical ingredients. This has a toner consistency and can certainly be used as a toner, but functionally it works best as a liquid BHA product.
- DDMG (gel-versie dus!) [+]
Talk about a long time coming! Well past the time when Clinique clearly knew Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion wasn’t dramatically different in the least, they still recommended their poorly formulated lotion as an essential skin-care step in their famous three-step routine. Although the original lotion remains a mundane, not-as-good-as-Lubriderm option for normal to dry skin, it is and always has been ill-suited for those dealing with oiliness or breakouts. Therefore, for those loyal to Clinique’s basic regimen and for those looking for a more affordable department-store moisturizer, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is a welcome addition. The formula is more a lotion than a gel, but does feel quite light and silky on the skin. It does not contain any oils or heavy thickening agents, and this fragrance-free moisturizer is appropriate for normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin. The only issue I have with the product is its meager antioxidant content (though it has some great anti-irritants). Most of Clinique’s moisturizers are brimming with state-of-the-art ingredients, but this one, though certainly effective for its intended skin types, is plain by comparison—yet dramatically better than their original and still incredibly popular lotion.
- DDML (lotion- versie dus!) [+-]
Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion is the same as it always was: a basic, mundane, out-of-date, yellow-toned moisturizer built around mineral and sesame oils. It’s an option for dry skin and is fragrance-free, but, other than its reasonable price tag, there is nothing else attractive or beneficial about this product.
- All About Eyes [+-$]
All About Eyes is one of Clinique’s most popular items, and its silicone-based formula leaves skin very smooth and silky. It contains some outstanding ingredients to fortify skin and allow it to repair itself, but many of these are compromised by packaging that exposes them to light and air. Clever cosmetic pigment technology changes the way light is reflected off shadowed areas, temporarily improving the appearance of dark circles (sort of like a concealer but without coverage). If only Clinique would get this out of a jar and into an opaque tube, it would be a winner!
* Nivea
- Wash Off [+]
This is an exceptionally standard gel cleanser that is suitable for its intended skin types. The basic, fragranced formula removes makeup and rinses cleanly. There isn’t much else to say, other than that the formula would be better if it were fragrance- and colorant-free.

- Deep Cleansing Gel [+]
Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, for Clear Skin is a standard water-soluble cleanser that contains only a tiny amount of AHA and BHA, too little to exfoliate skin (never mind the brief contact these ingredients have with it). The amount of witch hazel water isn’t cause for concern, making this a good option for normal to oily skin.
- Purifying Toner [-]
Normaderm Purifying Astringent Toner lists alcohol as the second ingredient, which makes this too drying and irritating for all skin types.
- Exfoliating Cleansing Gel [+]
Normaderm Daily Exfoliating Cleansing Gel is similar to the Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, except without the witch hazel and with the inclusion of polyethylene beads, which makes this a good cleansing scrub for normal to oily skin.
- Anti Imperfection Hydriation Care [-]
Normaderm Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care bills itself as a light moisturizer, and it is, but that’s chiefly because alcohol is the second ingredient. That won’t make imperfections look any better or tighten pores, unless by “tighten” Vichy means the pores are swollen from irritation
- Anti- Blemish Intensive Treatment Creme [+-]
Normaderm Anti-Blemish Intensive Treatment Cream is a water-based lotion with absorbent ingredients and 2% salicylic acid. The pH of this lotion is too high for the salicylic acid to effectively exfoliate, while the oil and thickeners this contains may make blemished skin worse. All told, this product is more confusing to, than helpful for, skin.
