riding in the netherlands?

Link naar dit bericht Geplaatst door de TopicStarter : 17-01-05 20:06

Hi

My husband and I will soon be moving somewhere near Rotterdam (probably Schiedam) to live for about year. From the Netherlands, we'll live in Kuala Lumpur for a year so we probably won't bring along my horse. I've ridden all my life and can't imagine not riding for two years. Are there farms, barns, or schools that offer lessons on upper level?

We live in Texas where everything is far apart (I drive almost 100 km to get to work every day) so a far trip for lessons wouldn't be a problem. I don't think it would be a problem. Verward

I'm very excited about moving and I'd appreciate ANY information and advice. Thank you.

Best,
susan

Wow! That'll be a big change!
Leaving wide open Texas for big city Rotterdam!
Barendrecht is on the other side of Rotterdam, but I do know that Rotterdam and its surroundings have a lot of riding possibilities.
So there must be one in the neighbourhood that you'll like I'd say Lachen
Good luck!

Hi susan , there are thousends of riding schools in the netherlands
I wonder why you are going te live in schiedam , wath are you thinking to find there , or do you get a house via the company of your husband?
where in rotterdam is he going to work??

do you tjust go to ride in a riding school or also "out doors"
in oostvoorne and rockanje (1/2 houre drive from rdam )
are several ridingschools who arrange
outdoor rides (a bit of dune and wood mostley beach , wich is , for dutch standards , wide over there

the netherlands is a smal narrow crowded little country
and most people ride or tjust in the menage or on the road

a few are lucky enough to have there horse (or ride) located
near wood or beach

you tjust have to see for your selve when you get here
wich location will suit you best

but tjust in the area of rotterdam there are at least 30 riding schools

so dont worry , you can even choose if you want to ride english or western style

greetings , and we wil certainly hear from you by then

Hi,

What a coincidence, I also live in Schiedam. I ride at a riding school in Bergschenhoek (about 20 minutes by car), which provides lessons in dressage, jumping and western. What kind of school are you looking for?
And at which level?
You can send me an e-mail or a pb, perhaps i can help you find the right stable.

Thank you for all the replies- the only good information I got from US boards so far was a reference to this one! I am much more relaxed after reading all your posts. I knew that breeding was big but i'm happy to know that riding is even bigger!

We might live in Schiedam because that's where my husband's job will be. We've discovered that the company is flexible so we can really live wherever we like. He is supposed to visit in a few weeks to look for an apartment and figure out what we need to bring. It will be a big change not having a farm to care of but i'm looking forward to it. If we can find an apartment that will take pets, we'll bring Vincent and Jules, two of our cats.

I ride dressage and would like to school in that. I have a Rubinstein gelding called Music who thinks he's a dog. We've schooled to around 3rd level (no flying changes yet) and competed to 2nd (don't know how the US levels compare.) I'm surprised to hear that western riding is popular there. Is it for pleasure riding or competing?

I'm even more excited about moving after hearing from everyone. Haha! thank you.

Hi Susan,

Music thinks he's a dog? Haha that's funny, then how does he behave?

What do you thought of The Netherlands before they told you at this 'forum' there are many possibilities to ride?

Horseriding is very popular in Holland. Dressage is the most popular I think but Western riding is still upcomming. For pleasure but also for competing.

You say you will miss a farm to care of but here in The Netherlands you can also start a little farm! Why not? Haha! In the east of Holland there are many possibilities to live in a house with space for animals and a horse. It is less expensive in the east than the west because the east is not so crowded and the biggest cities are in the west. For someone from texas the distance between the cities isn't very far. Maybe you can rent such a house and take care of someone's horse for a little whyle. To get such a horse you just advertise at an advertising site (you can pb me if you want to know the adress) and ask for it. If you take care for it and have space for it some people don't even want money for the horse and when you go back to your country you can give it back to the owners. Or you just ask for a horse to ride, many people are asking for co-riders on the internet!

I hope you enjoy your stay in The Netherlands!!

there are a lot of riding schools near rotterdam (especially when you use "near" in american standards! An hour drive is like almost to the middle of the country.
But I don't know if the normal riding schools can give you an opportunity to ride on your own level! You'll have to start somewhere I guess, and then just try to find a horse you can lease or something (and maybe private instruction). In that way you can keep training on your own level.
anyway, there are more then enough horses/barns and riding schools in Holland!
(for example: Manege de prinsenstad, close to Rotterdam, it's a riding school/jumping stable and they sell horses.)

in holland a lot of people just help other horse-owners to ride their horse(s) (we call it a bijrijdpaard/verzorgpaard), sometimes free, sometimes with paying some money)
maybe someone at bokt can help you with finding one

Space is limited here and depending of your hour of travel one hour driving can mean 60 miles or 5 miles !
I can not recommend any trainingschools for your level.
Good luck finding one.

Maybe you can better search for a stable with horses for sale. At the riding-schools here in the Netherlands, you don't learn much. The only thing you learn is sitting on a girl and make some figures like a circle. You say that you have a own horse, then I think your riding level is higher than the ridingschools her. You can ride here a horse, but you don't learn anything.
Better is to search a stable were you can ride horses which are for sale. There you can ride horses with character and you can learn anything. I think that you don't like the schools when you have ride there for 3 months. At a other stable you can really ride at a horse, you can really ride at you own level. Maybe you can get there a own teacher and learn something, so you don't think after 3 months; It's boring Knipoog

(I'm sorry for all my mistakes, English isn't mine good thing.)

You could look it up at:
www.goudengids.nl

Search for manege in Schiedam in the yellow box. You'll get a list with a number of possibilities in SChiedam and surroudings.

Good luck!

My question is what do you ride. English (dressage/jumping etc) or western?
because not every stable / school give western lessons. But no panic in Rotterdam and surroundings there are a lot of stables, so I think you will have a great time here.

o sorry i'm probably blind, but I didn't read that you ride Dressage.
wow a Rubinstein, you are so lucky damn I just can't help it I like sons and daughters of Rubinstein very much.

About western riding the people do it for pleasure and also for competing.

Hello SusanB

If you are going to live in the neighbourhood of Rotterdam the ridingschool called The Prinsenstad is one of the better places to be. It is big, but they have horses that can perform on a higher level and lessons are given by very schooled people. And because it is so big they have a lot of horses to choose from.
Although there is little to none trailridefacilities there, you can easely go to the seashore and rent horses there (The Hague/Wassenaar) or take a trip to the Veluwe where I live . The Veluwe is the biggest area of non-spoiled nature, protected by law, with old woods (pine/oak), sandhills, heath/moors and 60+ miles of sand/dirtroad (no engines allowed).

Here is a link that could be helpfull to look at some houses:
http://www.marktplaats.nl/huur.htm
and for calculating some distances this one is handy: www.routenet.nl

Yeah manege de Prinsenstad (or riding school 'de Prinsenstad') is a very big and also good educated riding school in/near Rotterdam.
They have a website to, but the language is not available in english.. www.manegedeprinsenstad.nl

In contrary to some replies here, I don't recommend starting your own farm here, even if it's just a few animals. Horses are easy to purchase, but not very easy to sell and if you want cows of pigs, you have to have permits. These permits are very expensive.

I'd like to recommend this site to you: www.fnrs.nl on this site you can find every classified ridingschool in the Netherlands.

Good luck in finding the right ridingschool.

May I ask you what you will do with Music? Is he going to be sold or is somebody taking care of him, while you are abroad?

on www.marktplaats.nl you can also search for a 'bijrijdpaard"

many horse-owners do not have the time to ride their horses everyday,
therefore many people ride 2-3 times somebody'elses horse.

mostly it is for free (because you help them out), but sometimes the owners
ask a sharing in the costs.

To have a better view on Dutch levels here's a list:
B - Basic, just figures, trot, canter, walk.
L1 + L2 - speed changes, extended trot and canter, and starting sideways (i
thought)
M1 + M2 - sideways and reverse canter (don't know what it's exactly
called).
Z1 + Z2 - simple changes (canter - walk - canter)
ZZ-licht - flying changes
ZZ-zwaar -
Intermediaire I
Intermediaire II
(Prix st. Georges)
Grand Prix

Someone, please fill me in Haha! I'm not really into dressage, I train it, but
I never competed. We are more into endurance, which is a coming up sport in
the Netherlands.

Are you used to riding a little recreational as well? Because in my opinion
the outdoor options near Rotterdam are few(er). We live near Utrecht where
there are beautifull forests (we are so happy to have 80 km of
horsebackriding tracks nearby Knipoog ), near Rotterdam you there's hardly any
forest, but an absolute pro is the beach. It is magnificent to go there for
a ride, even when it's stashed with people. There really is no beach like
our beach!

Oh, I think you will really enjoy a visit to Madurodam (in the Hague). That
is a park with minitiature versions of important or known buildings (and
bridges) in the Netherlands. And it happens to be a very good example of
the smallness of the Netherlands Knipoog I really loved it, even though it was
crowded with tourists (a lot of Japanese people). It was great fun!

And how's your Dutch? Can you say 'Goedemorgen' properly? *just teasing*

If distance is not a problem, we lives 35 minutes from Rotterdam by car. We are a ridingschool, and we have 4 stars of the FNRS (www.fnrs.nl wich are giving de ridingschool points and stars, the highest is 5.) We have different horses, some are on the L level but some are on level Z2 (she noukies message what it means Lachen ) Our website is under my WWW-button, only in dutch, but when you want to know something you can email me.
