I don't thing the distance will be a problem here, 100 km and you are halfways on your way out of the Netherlands (depends) but it will be the traffic jams during rush hour that will probably cause some problems. If you are flexible enough to be able to live somewhere else than in the neighbourhood of Rotterdam, I would definately choose that.

Maybe we might take the fact into consideration that those with horses do not have always the time and the leasure to spend too much time behind their desks? Knipoog

"Are we out of site allready ??"

NO NO NO!! Please don't think that!

I should have explained before. I mostly use the internet at my job. We live in the country so our internet is through the telephone and it is very unpredictable. It takes forever to get connected and then for no apparent reason it disconnects. I usually work every day during the week but missed a few days last week because I had dental work done. Yuck! It feels like a truck drove over my head... but my teeth are pretty! Haha!

I'm VERY flattered by all of the responses, suggestions and offers to help me. I think the US and Americans have a bad reputation in a lot of the world, so I did not expect many answers. I was surprised by how many replies and completely tickled by how VERY kind you all have been. I go to work tomorrow and I will reply to every post, question, everything!

My husband is going to Netherlands on the 06-02-05 and stay for a week to meet his new company and find a place for us to live.

Thank you all again,
susanB

Is there anything about Texas (or the US) that you want to know?! Knipoog

Maybe is a private stable something for you. Something like Hans Bernoski. He sels horses en trains them. His stable is in Bergschenhoek/Bleiswijk. He rides on a high level.
He also rent stables. (zeg ik dat goed???)

We don’t want to start another farm… moving is going to be a break from all the hard work! Cool We're going to try to lease our farm instead of selling it. That way, we can have it when we move back to the US. Music is going to live with my best friend. She has several horses (4 of them Dutch) and loves Music like he was her own.

I’ve made a list of all the schools that you all have suggested. When we get there, I’ll have to spend time looking at them. Do you need an appointment to visit? From the description posted by laui! and noukie, I’ve ridden to Z1. Will that make it easier to find lessons? Are most lessons done in groups?

What is a sale barn and why would they let you ride the horses? A couple of you mentioned ‘bijrijdpaard’. I can’t find a translation for the word. Is it like a lease or rent? (I will take a language course when we get there. I have trouble pronouncing words where the pronunciation is printed out next to it. It will take a lot of study to be able to understand all of bokt and know what you are really saying. Haha! )

Tinkerzzzz, thank you, I appreciate the offer…. I’ll surely keep it in mind. He isn’t a bronco, is he? >;) *LOL*

Riding on the beach sounds like huge fun! Can you ride in the water? If there are other people at the beach, what about the poop? Is the Veluwe a city and a park? It would be a beautiful place to explore on horseback. I enjoy riding out. After we school, I always take Music out in the hay fields. Sometimes we just play out there. I don't know what he'd do at the beach since he tries to lay down in any small puddle of water.

I think it is very neat that Western riding is popular there. Living in Texas, we take the western culture for granted. Even at work, most men wear cowboy boots. Are Quarter Horses popular? Do you like the old fashioned working ones or the lighter show horse kind?

A "bijrijdpaard" is a horse that you ride for a couple of days a week, depending on what the owner agrees on. You make agreements on how often you take care and ride the horse and if you are going to help out financialy and if so, for which amount.

A "leasehorse" is like renting a horse for a certain days a week, or full-time.
Most of the time you pay an amount for stable-costs to the owner.

Handelsstallen are companies that buy and sell horses. Most of the time they try to train the horse to a higher dressage or jumping level. So they can make a bigger profit on them. Some stables also train young horses (3 and 4 year olds) to be ridden.

A lot of good riders, find a voluntary-job at a "handelsstal" where they can ride different horses, get lessons and sometimes compete with them.

If you are Z1-level, it shouldn't be difficult to find a "bijrijd"horse or voluntary job at a "handelsstal" There aren't much riders that can ride on that level and haven't got a horse or more to train/ride.

Good Luck!

Bijrijdpaard isa horse of someone else, who in most of the occasions hasn't have the time or possibility to ride his or her horse every day and for that you can ride that horse of him/her as much as she needs you. Sometimes there are no costs, sometimes you have to pay for it, that depends of the owners view and intentions (sometimes she takes a bijrijder (as you in that case can be called) to cover the expanses and sometimes not) And it also depends on the owner and yourself how often you do her'his horse. this can vary from 1 to 7 days a week...

Hello,

I heard you lived in Kuala Lumpur??? My parents have lived there a couple of years ago! And i also went there about five years ago. I can thell you that after Kuala Lumpur Rotterdam won't be such a big change. For me Kuala Lumpur was much more complicated and bigger... Where did you live in Kuala Lumpur, cause friends of me still live there.
I know that there are only in Rotterdam about 8 ridingschools and in Dordrecht (not far from rotterdam) are also about 4 ridingschool I know. Hope to hear about your experience in Kuala Lumpur (have you vissited the Twin Towers???)

I think a "bijrijdpaard" is the way to go, there are lots of stables around Schiedam, like "Spalandruiters" "Zeeuw" "Stalling 't Einde" these are all locate at the Groeneweg.
Futhermore if ypu like the beach then check out a place called Hoek van Holland, there are a lot of maneges there.
But to find them alle you better use the option of the www.goudengids.nl fill in manege and Schiedam adn you will find them all.
Most of the times you dont have to make an appointment to visit a manege or a pensionstable (pension means that all the horses are privately owned)
Mail me when you arrive, we have a meet!
See you,
Liesbeth

Yes, you can really swim with your horse in the sea , but not in summer of course. The Veluwe is a national park it isn't a city, there are many cities near the Veluwe like Apeldoorn and Arnhem (where I live now, I used to live near Rotterdam).

I hope you will enjoy it here in our little crowded country.

Heb ik toch verdorie net een heel verhaal in het Engels zitten fabriceren, wordt ik eruit gemieterd! Ok, poging 2

If your level is Z-1 I don’t recommend you to go to a riding school. Unless you’re planning on doing some teaching yourself. I think riding a horse for someone else would be the best thing for you, especially if the owner allows you to take private lessons.

A lot of people who are looking for a co-rider (bijrijder, I hope this is the right translation) or who are co-riders and are looking for a horse to ride, place an ad on the internet. http://www.marktplaats.nl/ is one of the most popular sites. Choose ‘Dieren/toebehoren’ on the left and then ‘Paarden: ruiters/verzorgers’. Bokt itself also has the possibility to place an ad, on viewforum.php?f=5 (horses for sale and people looking for a co-rider) or viewforum.php?f=65 (people looking to buy a horse and co-riders looking for a horse to ride)

Asking a salesbarn / trade-stable (handelsstal?) if they need anyone to ride their horses, like other people here suggested, is also a good idea. But beware, not all trade-stables have the best interest of their horses at heart.

Good luck with finding a horse to ride and with adjusting to the Netherlands.
