helaas in (archaisch) engels:

François Robichon de la Guérinière translated by wiliam Fraser 1801

'the bridle, in it's collective sence, is that instrument, which principally enables the horseman to govern and guide the horse, so as to make him execute waht he requires of him. To perform his business justly and gracefully, the animal must first be made very supple in his fore parts, and his head and neck so managed, that one may be raised and the other arched or bent, more or less, to the hand to which he is to turn. the bridle called the bitt is so impotent in it's endeavours to raise the head, that it even produces the opposite effect, nor, from the confinement in which it keeps the horse and the small compass it affords for the action of the rein, does it allowthe rider sufficient room to bend him, without pulling down his head, and putting him upon the shoulders, both of which are incompatible with the true and sound principles of the art. the frequent use of cavesons and bradoons fully evinces the want of power in the bitt to supple the horse, or raise it's for part.(...)

and it is plain from the constant use of bitts, and of cavesons in conjunction with them, that the ancient horsemen understood but very imperfectly the posture in which the horse's head should be placed, so as to influence and direct his motions according to the formation of his body and limbs; for there is such an immediate and strict connection and dependancy between the parts that the change of posture in any single one, will more or less, affect the whole. To illustrate this, let the horse be considered a lever or poll, when one end is downward or towards the ground, it is certain that the othermust be raised and turned upward. If the head of the horse, therefore, is brought down towards his knees, it will followthat his croupe must be raised, and that it is then impossible for him to be balanced upon his haunches, or to bend well in hand; for the hand can have but little power over the horse, while the head is down; nor ha the horse, when in this attitude, a possibility of uniting, or putting himself together(guirinieres only frase for collection);for this can only be done, by bringing his haunches under him, and making them support his foreparts: a bitt, therefore operating chiefly to bring down the head, cannot but, more or less, be the source of these errors and contraditions.'

let op: 'impotent' is als zodanig bedoeld, er mist geen r.
