Citaat:4,5 stars!
I rarely write reviews (so don't judge me hahaha), but this book deserves one as it is one of my new favorites. And to me, a book that stands out among many others.
There is art, music, and history. There is the back- and forth timeline between the past and present, which is done great. I also liked that it was the 1700s vs. 2014/2015, and not just the present vs. a few years back. Also, the personalities of the characters are great and V.E. Schwab writes beautifully. And there are these little details through the story, that keep coming back, which really adds to the book.Spoiler:
“Nothing is all good or all bad,” she says. “Life is so much messier than that.”
And there in the dark, he asks if it was really worth it.
Were the instants of joy worth the stretches of sorrow?
Were the moments of beauty worth the years of pain?
And she turns her head, and looks at him, and says, “Always.”
For the people I know who are also interested in reading this book, keep in mind that this book is mostly character-driven instead of plot-driven.
This book is more like a fictional memoir, the story-telling of someone's (magical) life, rather than an action-packed (fantasy) book. Make sure you have the right expectations, because I think that most disappointment stems from having the wrong expectations of the book since it's so hyped-up (or if it's just not for you, also fine!).Spoiler:
“But this is how you walk to the end of the world. This is how you live forever. Here is one day, and here is the next, and the next, and you take what you can, savor every stolen second, cling to every moment, until it’s gone.”
