Luchtzuigen zonder muur/hek?

This research was undertaken at the department of clinical veterinary science in 1995 at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom (UK) and reported in a special supplement to the Equine Veterinary Journal published by the British Equine Veterinary Association.

Reporting on the research was J.G. Lane, BVetMed, FRCVS. "It has widely been stated," Lane wrote, "that horses which exhibit either of these abnormal behavioral patterns (cribbing and wind-sucking) swallow air (aerophagia), and it is also believed that the introduction of large quantities of air into the digestive tract predisposes horses which crib-bite to colic and/or poor bodily condition.

"The purpose of this presentation is to report the results of endoscopic and fluoroscopic studies of the pharyngeal structure of horses during the act of crib-biting/windsucking," he continued. "The major conclusion has been that deglutition (swallowing) does not occur as part of the stereotype and that 'aerophagia' is an inappropriate synonym for this stereotype." (A fluoroscope is an instrument used to observe an internal structure within the body by means of real-time X rays.)

The study involved horses which were known cribbers. The horses stood in stocks for both stages of the investigation and a wooden bar covered with coconut matting was placed at the front of the stocks to provide an inducement to crib.

Videotape recordings were used so that there could be a slow motion analysis of both endoscopic and fluoroscopic images. When the researchers analyzed the data, they were able to follow the sequence of events that occur during cribbing from beginning to end. Researchers' conclusions included the following:

Swallowing air is not a feature of cribbing/wind-sucking. The events recorded during the stereotypic sequences did not remotely resemble swallowing.
The source of the characteristic noise associated with this oral stereotypy results from an inrush of air into the upper part of the esophagus.

Recent Innovations in the Management of Crib-biting

Both McGreevy and colleagues (1995a) and Redbo and colleagues (1998) have also reported that cribbing appears to be associated with the feeding of concentrates, which supports the observation of Fitzwygram (1911) who reported that the condition “most commonly … arises from some form of acidity …of the stomach”. In 1888, Mayhew suggested that the condition could be prevented if treated in the early stages with “ a lump of rock-salt in the manger; (and) a large piece of chalk; should these be unavailing, always damp the food, and, at each time of feeding, sprinkle magnesia upon it, and mingle a large handful of ground oak-bark with each feed of corn.” This observation appears to have been forgotten and not tested experimentally on subjects of any age until recently. In 1997 a pilot study (Mills unpublished data) was conducted using a commercial antacid preparation (Rennie, Laboratoires Roche Nicholas SA, France) (Fig 1). This suggested that treatment with antacids might have the potential to significantly reduce cribbing. Coincidentally at around the same time, Nicol (1999) was suggesting that these oral behaviours, including wood chewing, might be an attempt to increase alkaline saliva flow to reduce the increased acidity associated with feeding concentrate rations. Thus providing a potentially sound scientific basis to the mechanism behind the effect seen. Crib-biting in foals has subsequently been found to be associated with gastric ulceration (Nicol et al, 2001) and we have recently completed a double-blind placebo-controlled field study into the use of antacids for the control of cribbing in adult horses (Mills and Macleod, manuscript submitted). The results of this study will be presented.

Horse research sheds light on stable vices

By Alison Handmer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Research which may lead to better living conditions for stabled horses has earned an international animal welfare award for Veterinary Science senior lecturer Dr Paul McGreevy.

Dr McGreevy's research into "crib-biting" by horses has been recognised by the Prince Laurent Foundation of Belgium with a research prize that is granted every two years by HRH Prince Laurent.

Dr McGreevy's discoveries leave the way open for further research into dietary treatments to prevent the behaviour occurring, and for greater understanding of horses already affected.

"Crib-biting", which affects up to one in 10 stabled horses, involves the horse holding on to a fixed object – such as the rack containing its food – and pulling back while engulfing air. Regarded as a "stable vice", it was standard practice until recently to try to prevent it happening by cutting holes in the horse's mouth or cutting muscles in its neck.

Affected horses often damage their teeth and muscles, and the behaviour is sometimes copied by other horses.

Smiles all round: Paul McGreevy says dietary treatments may combat 'crib-biting' in horses.

Instead, Dr McGreevy and his colleague from Bristol University, Professor Christine Nicol, have found that horses start crib-biting as a reaction to being denied the opportunity to graze.

"Horses evolved to graze for 16 hours a day and that involves a lot of chewing action," Dr McGreevy said. But because concentrated feed takes only one to three hours to digest, it increases the level of acid in their stomachs.

"Crib-biting is a product of the way we manage horses, not least because we want to restrict their grazing so that they are able to run faster.

"Several studies have shown that more than 80 per cent of race-horses have gastric ulcers and that many crib-bite in a vain attempt to regularise their digestion."

Dr McGreevy began studying the behaviour of stabled horses with Professor Nicol in Bristol in 1992, and started his work in Australia in 1996. He would like to introduce more crib-biters as reseach horses within the Faculty's herd, allowing further study of their behaviour and nutrition.

He hopes that dietary treatments will be found to reduce the incidence and severity of oral stereotypies – the repetitive movements seen in horses with the condition – opening up new, humane avenues of treatment and prevention.

Dr McGreevy sees the Prince Laurent prize as a victory for animal welfare, a cause often overshadowed by research and innovation aimed at the lucrative production sector. "I've been fascinated by horses all my life and the opportunity to study their behaviour for the purposes of welfare was too good to miss," he said.

"The reason I became a vet was to improve animals' well-being, but so often vets have to inflict a certain amount of pain as part of the treatment process. So it's very rewarding to develop therapies that work on a broader level, using non-invasive techniques."

Latest Research

Five years ago Richard Peace and his wife Susi came up with a theory that rather than being stress related, wind-sucking could possibly be due to a problem horses have in digestion. They'd noticed years before that wind-sucking horses kept on limestone soils tended to wind-suck less than if they were kept on clay soils for example. They decided to try feeding Rennie (the human antacid treatment for indigestion) to a wind sucking horse they owned at the time. They gave the horse 6 Rennie tablets after his feed and his wind sucking decreased by 200%. The results were amazing albeit in just a one horse trial. So simple, yet nobody had come up with it in years of research. They went to De Montfort University with their idea who carried out an extensive trial on 100 horses and the results proved to be significant. This has changed the whole direction of research into wind-sucking in horses.
