RERUN UNVEILS "MONEIGH" EQUINE ART
First Annual Event Features Art Created By Famous Horses From The Past And Present
January 27, 2002-Carlisle, Ky-ReRun, Inc., the national Thoroughbred adoption program based in Kentucky has announced a new fundraising project to be held this year in conjunction with the Mane Event, ReRun's annual auction and dinner/dance.
Through a yearly event to be called "Moneigh-Equine Expressions," many horses who have made a name for themselves on the track and in the breeding shed will vie for the honor of becoming the top "equine artist" by creating art that will then be framed and auctioned live at ReRun's Mane Event on March 30 at the Embassy Suites in Lexington, Kentucky. Bidding will also be taken via a special web site set up for this event.
Several Lexington-area farms have agreed to participate in this project, including WinStar Farm, Mill Ridge Farm and Cobra Farm. The list of equine artists so far includes stallions Tiznow, Kris S., Victory Gallop and Gone West, as well as pensioners Groovy and Savinio and ReRun graduates Our Mims, El Bakan, Known Ranger and Region.
"As an industry we have an inherent responsibility to take care of the athletes that make it all possible, not only when they are winning, but in the many years that follow," said Bill Casner, co-owner of Winstar Farm. "ReRun is a great organization, and Winstar is happy to support its endeavours.
The horses will produce watercolor art using a non-toxic paint in vibrant colors on special watercolor paper. Prototype pieces have been produced by Our Mims and other ReRun horses painting with lips, tails and/or hooves.
Once completed, the artwork will be photographed and placed on the Mane Event web site at www.themaneeventkentucky.org. The unidentified framed originals will be placed on display in Lexington, Kentucky during the weeks leading up to the Mane Event. Art aficionados will be allowed to vote for their favorite pieces, as will anyone in attendance at the Mane Event. Prior to the live auction-to be conducted by The Stewart Group of Lexington-the identities of the artists will be revealed, as will the vote tally.
"We understand that, due in part to MRLS, many facets of the Thoroughbred industry may be in a tough spot financially this year," explained Shon Wylie, ReRun co-founder and president. "And we also feel strongly that adoption and retirement groups need to make strong efforts to help themselves financially in an effort to make available funding go as far as possible. To that end, we did a little creative thinking on this latest project. We hope that it will bring good PR to the Thoroughbred industry, and show that as an industry, we do know how to lighten up and have fun."
