The encyclopedia of the Horse schreef:Pony proportions are unique. The body length exceeds the height at the withers, and its depth equals the leg length. The length of the head equals the shoulder length and the latter equals the back measurement.
Ponies are considered, perhaps arbitrarily, to be breeds and types below 1.52 (15 hh). In reality, the difference between horses and ponies is primarily one of proportion. In the Thoroughbred horse, for instance, the distance from wither to ground exceeds the length of the body largely because of the length of the legs. In contrast, the pony is usually deeper through the body and shorter-legged in relation to its height.
