You know, I am a big fan of the WB jumpers, but this argument is silly- and as someone else pointed out, there are a lot of xxs in the European studbooks. Ladykiller is perhaps the best example, but there are TBs all over the place.

In addition to the famous TB show jumpers and dressage horses already mentioned, you might also point out that the Brits, Irish, South Americans and the North Americans did and do have mostly TBs to work with. The European WB is now a big part of our equine population, but those TBS are the foundation of our English riding programs. And say what you will about the American show jumping program, the Brits, the Irish and the South Americans are no slouchers when it comes to those big fences! Now with the TB-WB crosses being bred here, we have a new generation of lighter riding horses who have some of the best attributes of both categories of horse.

A horse's breeding will only carry him so far, but his heart and mind, not mention his training, is what takes him to where his rider wants to go.

You can take a line and say it isn't straight- but that wont change its shape. Jets to Brazil

OK,... My flame suit is on.

I agree that there are many very successful TB jumpers out there... we've named just a few.
(Wasn't Gem Twist also TB?)

But I also agree, at least to some extent, with the argument that they can't collect as well as warmbloods. It's not true for every individual, but in GENERAL, I think that's true. TBs were built to run, primarily... and many of them find collection very difficult. No, not all... but I think there are valid points to each side of this argument.

Half of Riding is 30% mental ... no wonder there are so many bad riders

Allison Firestones long, lanky gray Jox is a TB! And hmmm... A TON of eventers are TB's and they jump some CRAZY things!!!

Tb's dominated the best years for US show jumping. Lauriep needs to get to this thread. Also notable about Touch of Class is that she's tiny, barely bigger than a pony.

Resident racing historian
Founder of the Mighty Thoroughbred Clique

Coconut Grove, Big Ben, Idle Dice..... Wasn't For The Moment a TB as well? Then there is the eventing world- it's dominated by TBs.

I have only trwo words for your dutch friends - Jet Run -

I'm through!

Just take a look at this. It's the information on the horses that competed at Rolex this past year. These horses do more amazing feats of jumping than the open jumpers--and they HAVE to be able to come back off their hocks.

http://www.rk3de.org/Competitors.cfm

Oh, and 90% are TB.

Idle Dice!

Other TB jumpers:
Napur.
Maxximum Clearance.
Coconut Grove.
I believe all the above stallions show/showed in the jumper division.

Who was the horse who holds the High-Jump record? He's from (I think) Chile--he was TB.

Other noted TBs:
Jet Run
Good Twist
Democrat

I don't remember--was Untouchable TB??

And of course, TBs dominate eventing, where they have to both jump and do dressage.
And steeplechase race horses are all TBs...and they jump big fences.

There are quite a few TB's that have done well -- I was just recently reading about the Pan Am Games in Practical Horseman and there was an article about Buck Davidson and Mystic Mike, who was a TB. They jumped double-clear and got moved up from 11th to 3rd [of course, everyone probably knew this before me! ]

No flame intended but i couldn't resist pointing out that many "warmbloods" were bred to pull a carriage. You just cannot generalize.

Styles do change and today's Show Jumping courses ask different questions of any horse..the most successful blend US Jockey Club bloodlines with European stock. Some of the most successful are predominately American TBs tho they were foaled and show under a European flag.

Ask your friend in the Netherlands to do a little pedigree research to see just how much they owe to American TBs.

Nothing wrong with a little tweaking to improve things by outcrossing...most of the TBs named here competed years back, at least in the Show Jumping venue and even eventers are seeing more and more of the WB outcross..

But, IMHO, rocking back has NOTHING to do with it.

The Horse World. 2 people, 3 opinions. That's the way it is.

That's funny, because I recall before WBs (including Dutch) became popular in North America, hearing all the time that 'those cart horses' weren't any good for dressage or jumpers. Honestly, I wouldn't bother to argue those dolts.

http://www.volbloeds.nl/rensport/rensport.htm

The Thoroughbred is of particular and unique interest since it has the oldest closed studbook of any domestic breed of animal in the world.

Babamist
By J.W. Equine
If one talks about the breeding of event horses in North America, Babamist immediately jumps to mind, as no other stallion on this continent comes close to his record. His offspring are well known in eventing circles and include Arctic Mist (registered as Grey Brother), Chamikazi (with Kim Morani), Epiphany, (with Cynthia Holz), Good Force (with rider/owner Lisa Lewis), Heyday (Pan Am gold medallist with Bruce Davidson), Mystic High (USCTA Mare of the Year), Mystic Milo (with Mary Hazzard), My Turn (with Mary Hazzard), Patrick Anyway (with Linden Wiesmann) and Snowy River (with Phyllis Dawson). For a stallion to consistently get offspring of international caliber in a specific discipline there must be some strong genetic factors at work.
The 1969 chestnut was bred by W. Burling Cocks and foaled in Maryland. In his racing days, Babamist had 13 starts in 4 years over jumps, which resulted in a record of 5-0-1 and earnings of $10,620 for his owner, Mrs. M. Valentine. But certainly these were not strong enough credentials to suggest he would be such a prolific sire of eventers. Perhaps if we examine his pedigree we may be able to identify some of the influences that made him so prepotent.
Mystic II- (1954, Bay) Raced at 2 and 3 in Europe where he had 14 starts (5-5-1) including stakes wins in France and a stakes placing in Germany. After being imported to the U.S. he had 79 starts (15-15-11) from 3 to 7 years of age. At stud he got China Run (steeplechase stakes winner of the Temple Gwathmey and the Charles L. Appleton Memorial while setting a new course record), Freeman’s Hill (set a new track record and won the Maryland Hunt Cup Steeplechase twice, at 10 and 11 years old), Life’s Illusion (Champion Steeplechaser of 1975), Mystan (third in the Blockhouse Hurdle Handicap), Mystic Lad (winner of 7 races and second in the Elkridge Hurdle Handicap), Onamystic (new course record setter and second in the Virginia Gold Cup Steeplechase), Soothsayer (Champion Steeplechaser of 1972), Springdale (Grand prix winning jumper in the U.S.) and Springer (Canadian Equestrian Team jumper), among others.
Babadana- (1949) At the track, she only had 2 starts but was said to have jumping ability. She also produced Babamist’s half-brother, Roi-A-Dan, who was second in the Georgetown Steeplechase Handicap and third in the Fair Hill Steeplechase before retiring to a life as a show hunter.
Relic- (1945, Black) After a race career that saw him win 5 of 7 starts in North America, he was sent overseas where he soon garnered a position among the leading sires in England and France. The list of his offspring includes Dear Brutus (won the Midsummer Hurdle Handicap), Gric (a sire of hunters), Olden Times (ancestor to the eventers Falconmirth, Out And About, Primitive Gold, Trans Ama Flirt and Tashiling), Buisson Ardent (ancestor to the Irish-bred jumpers Abervail Dream and Kilbaha as well as the eventer Ferndale Rubber Ball) and Pericles (KWPN approved sire of jumpers, dressage mounts and approved sons including the Westphalian, Paradox I, and the pinto dressage sire, Samber, in addition to being the broodmare sire of the KWPN dressage sire, Ulft). Interestingly, Relic descends in tail-female line from the mare, Vaila, as does the famous USET jumper, Gem Twist.
Tosca- (1942, Bay) Ancestor to Schalkhaar (KWPN jumper), Carrera (KWPN jumper) and Ashley (Selle Francais jumper). Her full brother, Tournoi, was a winner on the flat and over jumps before going to stud in Canada where his blood can be found in hunters and jumpers.
Flushing II- (1939, Grey) A stakes winner in France, he had 63 starts while racing until 7 years old. Three of his wins came in hurdle races before he came to this continent. His dam also produced Callandi, winner of 10 races on the flat and over jumps and is ancestor to the Canadian jumper, Carousel. Flushing II sired Songai (a 1949 colt who set a new track record, won the Rouge Dragon Hurdle Handicap and was third in the Rouge Dragon Steeplechase and Bushwick Hurdle Handicaps). His influence is found in the pedigrees of Amerigo (eventer), Carousel (jumper), Paul Harvey (jumper) and Trans Ama Flirt (eventer).
Beaubabs- (1940) Dam of Bab’s Whey (a 1947 mare who won the Delaware Spring Maiden Steeplechase and was second in the International Gold Cup Steeplechase), Beau Shah (a 1955 gelding who won the Brunswick Hurdle Handicap and was second in the Saratoga National Maiden Hurdle Stakes) and Babadora (second dam of the hunter, Miss December).
Gino- (1930) A third place finisher in the English Two Thousand Guineas before changing residence to the U.S. He is a half-brother to the well-known sire, Alibhai and is the sire of American Way (Champion Steeplechaser of 1948), The Heir (Set a new track record at Saratoga and won 7 separate Steeplechase stakes races) and Winged Hoofs (second in the Shilelah Steeplechase and third in the Cagliostro Hurdle Handicap), just to name a few. His name also appears in the pedigree of Broadcast News and Bruce Davidson’s former mount, Beacon Charm.
Although not immediately evident, what did strike the author was the apparent soundness and longevity of many of these ancestors and their descendants. In addition, there are a good number of jumpers and dressage competitors that trace to these same bloodlines. As we all know, these are definitely qualities and abilities one seeks in an eventer. As further proof of the “eventing” genes in Babamist’s lineage, let’s compare his ancestors (refer to pedigree chart) to those of some currently ranked international horses as well as a few “biggies” from the past.

Along with the physical characteristics of the Thoroughbred come several common personality traits as well. They can be courageous and competitive, but can also be high-strung and often temperamental. Because they are bred to explode from the starting gate of the track, they have gained a reputation for being "hot," with often-volatile tempers. This temperament, though, is also what gives the Thoroughbred its distinct determination and sharpness. Those who have had the patience to work through this temperament off the track have often found it an asset in both the jumping and dressage arenas. The same spirit that makes a Thoroughbred race well can also make it competitive in other horse sports.
The beginning of Thoroughbred appearances off the track occured in the 1960s when Sam Barr first rode Welton Gameful to become a successful eventer. Welton Gameful came from a long line of successful Thoroughbreds such as Pharos and Big Game. He then continued the good bloodlines in his offspring, Welton Apollo, Welton Crackerjack, and Welton Louis.
The French were the first to produce a major Thoroughbred showjumper, Laudanum by Mourne. He boasted a Grand Prix win in Puissance and continued on to become a well-known and profitable sire. Prosperous international Thoroughbred showjumpers include Ard Allez, Urgele by Rapace and Mity Wind. These pioneer Thoroughbreds influenced the showjumping world by channeling the strength and desire of the breed into keen and agile arena competition. There have since been many high profile Thoroughbreds at the Grand Prix and Olympic levels.
Despite the domination of Warmbloods in the dressage arena, Thoroughbreds have made notable advances in this type of competition as well. Thoroughbreds tend not to move with as much elasticity as Warmbloods, but their tremendous work ethic and sensitivity to rider command has helped Thoroughbreds to progress in dressage. In fact, there are now several Thoroughbreds competing at FEI and Grand Prix levels of dressage. The stallion Thoroughbred Mago by Diligo has competed successfully at these levels. Currently, Chief Speaker, Kriter and The Joker are all competitive dressage Thoroughbreds who have earned impressive scores at FEI and USDF levels.
More often than not, Thoroughbreds are used as improvement stock. They are bred with half-bred stock and representatives from other breeds in order to inject speed and stamina into the bloodlines. These breeds often produce good hunters, eventers, and show horses. There are several Thoroughbreds that have become famous for their ability to improve stock.
Ladykiller xx is perhaps one of the most notable Thoroughbred sires used for this purpose. A failure on the racetrack, Ladykiller xx sired 35 approved sons who inhereted their sire's speed genes, often in the form of jumping talent. All of Ladykiller's offspring have noble faces, large bright eyes, bay coats and excellent jumping ability. One of Ladykiller's most successful sons, Landgraf I, leads the list of successful sporthorse sires. He is the symbol of the modern Holsteiner Sporthorse and performance sire, and, to date, his offspring have won more than seven million dollars, mostly in show jumping.
Although many of the attributes in the Thoroughbred racehorse lend themselves nicely to other horse sports, distinctions have been made between bloodlines that produce good racehorses and those that produce good sport horses. Again, the Thoroughbred registry systems are important because they can help determine appropriate bloodlines for breeding Thoroughbred sporthorses. Currently, the registry systems only accommodate racing data for registered horses, but as the technology becomes more fine tuned, and can accommodate statistics on jumping, moving, and training ability, breeding of Thoroughbreds for horse sports will become more and more successful.
