Citaat:Denny Danny, grey, and Goodenough, brown, neither of whom exceeded 13.0hh both were champions, both showed a Welsh influence and both imparted quality and good movement to their stork. Both ran the Forest before standing at Private Stud. Both were also Society stallion in hand for one season. Denny Danny, although short on recorded pedigree surely traced to one of the Dyoll Starlight imports.
Citaat:There seems little doubt that degeneration would have occurred again had it not been for the intervention of Lord Arthur Cecil and Lord Lucas.
Both were radical and perhaps unconventional improvers of the breed. To correct the Forester's deficiency of bone, substance and hardiness, Cecil introduced kindred native bloods in massive proportions. There were the Rhum ponies (Black Galloways), Welsh, Dales, Fells, Dartmoors, Exmoors and more Highlands.
Lucas was responsible for the infusions of the famous Welsh Starlight blood through his Picket ponies, Daylight (by Dyoll Starlight) and Grayling (by Starlight's son Greylight). More Picket ponies were put in, carrying not only Welsh blood, but also that of Fell, Dartmoor and Exmoor. The gallant Lucas, who lost a leg in the South African War and was killed in France in 1916, even used a Basuto pony which he had brought back from South Africa.
After World War Two there emerged a group of five stallions which are recognised as being the foundation sires of the modern breed, but in the background as the 'eminence grise' of the New Forest, is the polo pony stallion Field Marshall. He was out of a Welsh mare and stood in the Forest in 1918-19. He appears significantly in the lines of the famous Brookside ponies.
The foundation stallions, found in the pedigrees of the best modern Foresters, are Denny Danny, with a line to Dyoll Starlight; Goodenough, out of a Welsh type dam reputedly by Field Marshall; Brooming Slipon, a chesnut by Telegraph Rocketer out ofiudy XV; Brookside David, descended from Field Marshall and Knightwood Spitfire by Brookside Spitfire out of Weirs Topsy by the black Highland, Clansman, from whom all dun Foresters are thought to descend.
