The Pessoa training system:
Foreword:
Most schooling reins are attached to the girth, thereby only pulling the horse’s head into a correct position and neglecting the important development of back muscles.
Developing the back muscles:
With the PESSOA SYSTEM the back muscles are forced to work, firstly in a low position, which helps to develop the muscle at the base of the neck, and subsequently in a high position, which is similar to that of the horse when ridden.
Balance:
When cantering, the PESSOA SYSTEM forces the horse to take the weight off the forehand and bring his hindquarters under him, thus improve balance.
It’s generally felt that the best gate to build muscles is the trot and the best gait to create better balance is canter.
It’s therefore recommended to start working at a trot and only when this gait is satisfactory to proceed to the canter.
The aim of the work at the canter is to obtain a neck position witch resembles that of the horse under saddle.
The progression of work from a low to a high position should not be hurried.
Each position should be well established before moving to the next.
Finally, the work session should not be too long, to avoid stiffness and muscle strain.
