But the life-or-death struggle -- which eventually killed both beasts involved -- has alerted biologists to potential new dangers from exotic pet snakes abandoned by their owners.
A University of Florida wildlife professor says the pythons could threaten an $8 billion Everglades restoration project. The exotic pets, which can grow as long as 20 feet, could also pose a danger to smaller creatures, including otters, squirrels, and even small children.
While there are thousands of alligators in the Everglades, it's unknown how many pythons there are. One biologist says one snake can have as many as 100 hatchlings, which may explain why the snake population has soared.

Foto's zijn helaas niet zo groot maar als je goed kijkt dan zie je dus dat de python uit elkaar gebarsten is. De alligator die hij probeerde op te eten was te groot! Echt een geval van: het oog is groter dan de maag.
